63 Things Every Student Should Know In A Digital World by Terry Heick

ed note: this has been updated from a previous post

But in an increasingly connected and digital world, the things a student needs to know are indeed changing—fundamental human needs sometimes drastically redressed for an alien modern world. Just as salt allowed for the keeping of meats, the advent of antibiotics made deadly viruses and diseases simply inconvenient, and electricity completely altered when and where we slept and work and played, technology is again changing the kind of “stuff” a student needs to know.

Experiences and best practices in and around MOOCs

Why are MOOCs innovative? They provide alternative ways for students to gain new knowledge according to a given curriculum. MOOCs can also enhance learners’ ability to think creatively to select and adapt a paradigm to solve the problem at hand. White paper: Information Research Fluency – Strengthening Student Success & Retention | Entrepreneurial Library Program

nformation has become increasingly complex, as have the mechanisms for accessing and manipulating it. Online growth has been dramatic and rapid, with “90% of all the data in the world… generated in the last two years” (SINTEF, 2013). The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) suggests that an escalating and complex information environment causes “diverse, abundant information choice” in academic studies, the work place, and in personal lives. Compelling evidence illustrates the positive and tangible impact of information literacy and research skills:

Assessment data links a higher GPA to an information literacy course for undergraduates, provided and taught by Entrepreneurial Library Program (ELP) librarians (Norton, 2013).According to a recent case study, 87% of students at Columbia University reported that the strength of their papers increased significantly as a result of using information literacy resources (CredoRef, 2012).First-year students who use the library during their first semester have higher grade point averages and student retention, according to a recent study from the University of Minnesota (Soria, 2013, p.162).

In 2013, ECAR collaborated with more than 250 higher education institutions to collect responses from more than 112,000 undergraduate students about their technology experiences and expectations. The findings are distilled into four broad themes to help educators and higher education institutions better understand how students experience technology on their respective campuses and the ways in which new, better, or more technology can impact students’ relationship with information technology.

The academic language employed in scholarly journals and scientific manuals is radically different from the  casual variety you come across everyday in blog posts and newspaper articles. This difference is manifested in different stylistic and lexical aspects. This is probably why many sophomores taking their beginning research methodology course find it hard to compose in such a variety and most often it takes them a lot of practice and reading to acquire the new style.

Being a graduate student makes your life ridiculously busy. On top of the work you do to feed yourself and pay your bills, you have stacks of piled books and PDF readings waiting you at home. I personally consider my situation advantageous since I have no other responsibilities (particularly family ones as I am living alone) to take care of except my work, studies and writing in this blog. Still sometimes I wish the day is 35 hours long to give me time to finish my assignments and scheduled readings, I wonder how those of you who are married and have kids , how do you balance your graduate studies, work and family?
