In personalized learning, learning components like pace of learning, content, sequence, technology, content, instructional approach, instructional content and other aspects are adjustable according to the needs and learning purpose of each student.

Growing up, I received what was largely a one-size-fits-all education; as a result, I struggled to connect academically to this model. Today, I’m amazed at the impact technology can have on the learning process—especially when it enables teachers to personalize learning. And I never tire of hearing stories from educators who are successfully implementing personalized approaches to provide their students a truly unique learning experience.

We often ask teachers, coaches, principals and district leaders about their “why” and about those one or two children who drive their work in education. More often than not, educators hone in on that student who needed to be understood, who learned differently and who was able to thrive because the educator was able to personalize learning for him or her.

Can a library be the perfect place for personalized learning? We believe the answer is yes. Libraries offer endless resources, space for learning, and individuals who are ready to assist students in the learning and research process. Sometimes when professors’ office hours do not line up with students’ schedules, we often forget, that librarians are here to help us too! That’s why we have libraries and librarians! Even if we think it is intimidating to approach a librarian, it should not be, because they are the experts in libraries! Not only are librarians available to assist us, but they are also available to teach us how to use the resources that the library has to offer.

The beginning of the semester is always a struggle. Finding a balance between building relationships with students, developing community amongst class members and administering the assessments necessary to get the data needed to design instruction isn’t easy. Especially when you’re personalizing instruction for every learner in your class.

First, there’s the diversity of learners, from school leavers to adults returning to education full or part-time, and those accessing prison education. Second, the qualifications, which range from GCSE resits through to degree-level apprenticeships. Finally, there’s the various destination pathways, from learners hoping to progress to higher education or go directly into employment. How are colleges then meant to go about tailoring and creating individual learning experiences, effectively and efficiently?

The Quantified Self movement allows us to closely track data that is relevant to our everyday lives through the use of technology. Wearable devices such as watches, wristbands, head sets, and necklaces can now record where we are, what we’re doing, how much time we’ve spent doing it, what our goals are, and how long it’s taking us to achieve them. While the movement initially focused on health and professional productivity, we’re now starting to see an increasing application of QS to both formal and informal learning settings.

Self-efficacy holds significant implications both for learners and educators in the journey to nurture high levels of skill and knowledge. The most difficult and challenging learner to teach is the learner who believes he or she cannot succeed.

"Personalized learning meets students at the intersection of their abilities and their interests, so why wouldn’t you want to individualize instructional experiences for every student in your classroom? For one thing, many teachers fear that individualizing lessons takes precious time they can’t afford to spend on creating bespoke learning sequences. In reality, you can’t afford not to personalize learning. Fortunately, you can get started as soon as tomorrow with these four low-tech strategies"

What is datafication? And how does it affect education? These questions were put to me ahead of conference discussion panel recently. While writing a few notes, it quickly became apparent I needed some categories to sort out my thinking. In simple terms, datafication can be said to refer to ways of seeing, understanding and engaging with the world through digital data. This definition draws attention to how data makes things visible, knowable, and explainable, and thus amenable to some form of action or intervention. However, to be a bit more specific, there are at least ten ways of defining datafication.

I'm a strong advocate of student centred learning. I can't see any other way education can be conceived. From my early years in education, studying Freedom to Learn by Carl Rogers and my initial forays into the classroom as a fledgling educator, I have strongly believed in the principles of keeping the student at the centre of the learning experience. Australian higher education has adopted a widening participation agenda with a focus on the participation of disadvantaged students, particularly those from low socioeconomic status (LSES) backgrounds. As these students begin to enter university in greater number and proportion than ever before, there is increasing interest in how best to facilitate their success. A recent national study employed semi-structured interviews to ask 89 successful LSES students what had helped them succeed. Twenty-six staff experienced in effectively teaching and supporting LSES students were also interviewed about what approaches they used in their work. Analysis of the study’s findings indicates a strong theme related to the use of technology in effectively teaching and supporting LSES students.
