Children who avoid challenging situations will lack the ability to succeed in the years to come. Taking on a challenge involves many skills, such as focus, adaptability, using critical thinking, and confidence.

Let’s not teach technology, or just teach our standard curriculum with technology, but rather really have students become global citizens through technology. They can use technology to not only transform themselves but the world as well. Here are some things to consider, or possibly reconsider, when we use technology in school:

When I moved to the USA from the southern hemisphere 20 years, I had to learn to drive on the other side of the street. This required me to “unlearn” what I knew and “relearn” how to drive. There was no choice or reason to delay. If I did not adapt, my safety and the safety of those around me would be at risk! Similarly, workplace employees do not have the luxury of slowly adapting to change. The pace is fast, constant and often overwhelming.
We know that an organization’s ability to adapt to change is critical to business success. Do we also appreciate the impact of individual behavior on successful transformations? For this to happen, individuals need to unlearn what they have previously learned and then relearn new and relevant information. This “learn-unlearn-relearn” cycle may repeat many times over.

Entrepreneurship may be mistakenly related only to economic activities and business creation, however, it is much more than that. ‘Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship’ is one of the eight key competences for lifelong learning defined by the European Union. It is refers to an individual's ability to identify and seize opportunities, turn ideas into action, and to plan and manage processes to achieve objectives. In this tutorial you can find out more about this key competence and how teachers can foster it in their students. What is entrepreneurship competence?
A new report forecasts that more than half a million students will be enrolled in competency-based education programs by 2020.

Historically speaking, studies of literacy have undergone two major shifts over the last four or five decades. The first shift took place in early seventies and eighties with the publication of a series of works such as The Literacy Myth (Harvey Graff, 1979), The Psychology of Literacy (Scribner & Cole, 1981), Literacy in Theory and Practice ( Brain Street, 1984), The Uses of Literacy: Aspects of Working Class Life (Richard Hoggart, 1957). These studies challenged the established and traditional approaches to literacy which, until then, was considered a personal affair, an individual cognitive process. These studies emphasized the social and cultural aspects of literacy and advanced the view that literacy is a social practice, a social event mediated by text. (for a detailed account of this development, read "New Literacies: Everyday Practices and Classroom Learning")

The potential of social networking sites in education is huge and we need to capitalize on it to enhance our professional development and consequently improve the quality of our instruction. Searching for articles on this topic , I came across Doug Johnson's post on the 10 social media competencies for teachers [http://doug-johnson.squarespace.com/blue-skunk-blog/2010/7/31/top-ten-social-media-competencies-for-teachers.html ]. I like the competencies Doug included and decided to make an infographic featuring all of these skills. Have a look and share with your colleagues.

Exploring Curation as a core competency in digital and media literacy education. In today's hypermedia landscape, youth and young adults are increasingly using social media platforms, online aggregators and mobile applications for daily information use. Communication educators, armed with a host of free, easy-to-use online tools, have the ability to create dynamic approaches to teaching and learning about information and communication flow online. In this paper we explore the concept of curation as a student- and creation-driven pedagogical tool to enhance digital and media literacy education. We present a theoretical justification for curation and present six key ways that curation can be used to teach about critical thinking, analysis and expression online. We utilize a case study of the digital curation platform Storify to explore how curation works in the classroom, and present a framework that integrates curation pedagogy into core media literacy education learning outcomes.

One of the Enabling Competencies identified by the Special Libraries Association is lifelong learning. In busy jobs, taking time to stop and learn something new is not always the easiest thing to do. As I’ve worked to balance professional development with immediate needs, I started to incorporate the practice of being a reflective practitioner.

Learning and Skills for the Digital Era This forms an important part of the Europe 2020 agenda and its various flagships and policy initiatives. JRC research in this area started in 2005 and is focused on how to make better use of ICT for rethinking learning, for innovating education and training and for addressing new skills requirements (e.g. digital competence) to generate growth, employment and social inclusion. More than 20 major studies have been undertaken and more than 100 different publications released. JRC research in 2016-2017 is structured around three main strands: - 21st century Skills and Competences
- Innovating and modernising Education and Training
- Open Education
JRC's Learning and Skills projects cover a wide range of studies: On citizens and learners (micro), on teachers and educators (professionals), and on educational organisations (meso) and societies (macro). As indicated in the image below, projects are developed in collaboration with sister Commission services (Education and Culture, Employment, Justice).

With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and cloud computing, the nature of work is transforming. The workplace is changing, raising fundamental questions about what it means to be a worker, and how to have a fulfilling career. While many focus on the possible downsides of these changes, like whether AI will displace millions of workers, we’d like to reframe the conversation and focus on the skills and workforce necessary for the (present and) future of work.

In this post I want to talk about all of us finding our place and building our careers in data. And when I say “data”, I mean analytics, data science, business intelligence, and so on. In the previous post, I talked about meeting new people and starting a personal website – go back to that one, if you haven't read it yet. Today, you are going to hear about a recurring theme, which is: getting started now. This means, getting the skills, joining the community, finding likeminded people… and seeing where it all takes you.
In this section we outline how skills and competencies for digital literacy and media literacy intersect and provide us with essential skills for playing, learning and working as citizens of the digital world.

The Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education [http://www.ala.org/acrl/standards/informationliteracycompetency ], adopted by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) in 2000, have become an essential document related to the emergence of information literacy as a recognized learning outcome at many institutions of higher education.

The typical student is not who you think. They may be older, distance, and more advanced than expected. That's where competency-based learning shines.
