Paton Prepares His Newspapers for a World Without Print | information analyst | Scoop.it
One of the biggest newspaper chains in America is run by John Paton, who thinks that print is, if not exactly dead, dying a lot faster than anyone thought.

Last week, John Paton met with executives of the MediaNews Group, the second-largest newspaper chain by circulation in the country.

» Why Wikipedia Is as Important as the Pyramids-Wikipedia protects the past without impeding the future. | information analyst | Scoop.it
Wikipedia protects the past without impeding the future. That’s the genius of the View History tab, which allows anyone to browse and compare every single version of an entry going back to 2001. Of course, multiple versions of the physical world cannot be physically preserved. But if all World Heritage sites were virtualized like Wikipedia, the physical places could continue to change with the people. The mud huts of Djennécould be preserved as three-dimensional models, augmented with historical and cultural information contributed by both archaeologists and locals, wiki-style. Layers of alteration to the houses could be digitally recorded and accessed by anyone anywhere. Rapid prototyping technology means the huts could even be printed out and physically explored. Were world heritage wikified, people’s homes would no longer be reduced to graves, sacrificed to outmoded Unesco principles. Djenné would not become a moribund ghost-town-cum-tourist-attraction like Iwami Ginzan.

10 Productive Tasks You Should Be Doing On Google+ Right Now

10 Productive Tasks You Should Be Doing On Google+ Right Now | information analyst | Scoop.it

Google+ had a hot start, but has since cooled down. For a lot of people, that means ignoring Google+. I want to warn you that is a bad idea.

Although the lights are on and it seems like nobody is home, trust me: there are people there. And they are the very people who can have a huge impact on your blog and business.

Why Google+ isn’t going anywhere

Google+ is designed to draw you away from both Twitter and Facebook. And in time, it could do this.

Yes, Facebook has over 800 million users. People like to state that number and then say “Facebook isn’t going anywhere.” Fair enough. But people do migrate. It happened to AOL. And it could happen to Facebook. In fact, former Facebook president Sean Parker says influencers are already moving from FB to Twitter and Google+.

Social Network Identity: Anonymity, Pseudonymity and Accountability -Media140 | @SilkCharm | Laurel Papworth | information analyst | Scoop.it

The Importance of Pseudonyms.
Not everyone wants the name they were born with. Richard becomes Dick, Margaret becomes Meg or Peggy. Nicknames stick around, especially if you’ve had that name since you were a kid playing footy. Who else uses nicknames? Women online – a lot. We’ve used them since day dot (well, since I’ve been in online communities, anyway, around the end of the 1980′s). We can be ourselves, speak up, debate, without fear of some loony guy showing up on the doorstep if we use a Pseudonym.

Trust and Complex Technology: The Cyborg’s Modern Bargain » Cyborgology

Trust and Complex Technology: The Cyborg’s Modern Bargain » Cyborgology | information analyst | Scoop.it

Adapting and extending Anthony Giddens’ Consequences of Modernity, I will argue that an essential part of the cyborganic transformation we experience when we equip Modern, sophisticated technology is deeply tied to trust in expert systems. It is no longer feasible to fully comprehend the inner workings of the innumerable devices that we depend on; rather, we are forced to trust that the institutions that deliver these devices to us have designed, tested, and maintained the devices properly. This bargain—trading certainty for convenience—however, means that the Modern cyborg finds herself ever more deeply integrated into the social circuit. In fact, the cyborg’s connection to technology makes her increasingly socially dependent because the technological facets of her being require expert knowledge from others.

La socialisation contre l’information ? | Médiaculture

La socialisation contre l’information ? | Médiaculture | information analyst | Scoop.it

| information analyst | Scoop.it
