Canadian Geographic Education is pleased to announce that from July 9-11, 2018 we will be bringing together 15 teachers in Ottawa, ON for a three-day summer institute. Teachers will explore Indigenous knowledge and learning, including giant floor maps, a field trip, guest speakers and teaching resources developed by Can Geo Education in tandem with Indigenous educators from across Canada.
The institute is open to all K-12 (and CEGEP) teachers in Canada. Preference will be given to teachers who teach geography and/or social studies. The workshop will be presented primarily in English; however, participants are welcome to complete their application in French.
There is no cost to attend the workshop. Participants are required to cover the costs of their travel to and from Ottawa.
Travel: All 15 participants are eligible to apply for a travel bursary. The amount of each bursary granted will be decided by Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) staff based on need. Please outline your travel needs below. Successful applicants will receive a cheque when their commitments are complete.
Accommodation: All accommodation costs will be covered by the RCGS, participants will be staying in suite-style residences at the University of Ottawa (90U). Each participant will have their own bedroom with double bed and will share a bathroom space with another participant of the same gender.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and snacks for each day of the institute will be included. Participants will be required to cover their dinner each evening.
Transportation: All transportation during the institute (to and from field trips and meeting locations) will be covered by the RCGS.
Each of the 15 participants in the Summer Institute will be required to: - Attend all sessions while in Ottawa - Produce one activity/lesson plan/unit plan/project based on their experience and linked with local Indigenous knowledge and learning to be published on the Can Geo Education website - Deliver a minimum of two professional development workshops throughout the 2018-2019 school year - Produce one Can Geo in the Classroom/Géographica activity during 2019 (http://www.cangeoeducation.ca/resources/in_the_classroom/default.asp)
