Curation is for Creation!

No opposition between curation and creation in Scientific and Medical Research!

on the other hand a Continuum

Researchers are indeed creating on the shoulder of giants!

You have to curate to create!

When you create, you and others have to curate to keep the game going...

Gilbert C FAURE's insight:

Why should you curate before creating, and during the research process?

Because you have first to learn, following the courses of your  teachers.

Because you have to train, following the experiences of others.

Because you have to practice in a continuous professonal development environment.

By chance, nowadays so many resources are available through the internet, from open courses to MOOCs!

As well, more and more research is done and more and more results published in traditionnal journals, in open source .. or made available in grey literature or big data files.

"there’s a whole world of cool stuff out there just waiting for discovery!" thks Gwyneth Jones

To create something new and original and make your field progress, you have to read what others have done before

- first to choose your topic of interest

- second to choose the methods you will use to adress the question

- third to follow what's going one during your project

"You and your readers get to stay on the cutting edge of the knowledge in your field." Thks Karen Dietz

Curation is mandatory for researchers and teachers.

Before, they read paper journals, made xerocopyies, piled them or filed them in boxes.

Curation pluses:

-building a database of selected scientific informations, for yourself, your colleagues, your students, an open database for others in the cloud

- will you become a thoughtleader? don't dream ! Your comments are welcome but who knows if what you are interested in also interest others

Sometimes, you will iintiate a friend near you or far way in the curation process and he will be hooked, more or less like you

-connections potentialities,

with other curators like you, you will meet in the cloud: you will rescoop their frindings, they will yours

with your group of specialists willing to work with you

"You get to form relationships with other influencers in your field, or connected to your field, which widens your influence and reach." Thks Karen Dietz

Curation minuses

- Curation is not so easy to perform, even with great tools such as scoop.it., mainly because of time involved.

Many begin, few pursue every day or at least regularmyover time!

- Curation might also become pretty addictive.

If you are aresearcher Keep time to create your own data!

If you are a teacher keep time to create your own teaching resources!

Anyway, enjoy curation to keep abreast of information and enjoy creation to make new findings in your field!

Gilbert C FAURE's insight:

obviously, Scoop.it can be a nice platform to build its own portfolio

A nice place to keep learning, teaching and research production:

reports

slideshare files used for learning, used for teaching,

posters,

scientific communications,

scientific publications, etc

A nice place to keep memories of meetings attended,

Is curation (with Scoop.it)...

for making money?

by

the company

curators

Gilbert C FAURE's insight:

Even if I do not understand completely the economic model of the curation tool Scoop.it, I sincerely hope that the active group based in San Francisco and Toulouse will thrive and succeed because they are a nice group of people according to our still virtual contacts through Scoop.it, Google+ etc...

They are selling different plans and indeed professionals and big companies willing to make their brand visible should buy the offers.

I am raising the question recently evoked somewhere, should curators make money

the answer was yes, because it is a job and indeed a specialized job requiring competencies, honesty, time and tenacity.

The curators select nuggets of relevant information in the noisy ocean of internet. They post it, comment it and add their opinion and advice...

People without those qualities and who are not doing this day to day job are not reliable and cannot be considered as real curators.

By the way it is the possible flaw of curation tools.

People are the supplementary human factor but they can be the achilles heel.

They are too many dead topics, open one day and dead a few days after!

But how to make money

I see some ways and a few potential markets for curators

Obviously, curating a topic allows to post informations from companies, either through press releases or from other sources. The topic demultiply information to reach a very specialized public and furthermore allows to keep it in this specialized database, where it can be.

The connection with companies willing to advertise their products and devices on pages of a specialized topic could be a way of making money. The Scoop.it topic becomes a classical journal, pages of advertisements between more edited general topics. But connections with marketing departments of those companies have to be created.

A few blogs only managed to succeed in this area

One could be building the e-reputation of a city, a region...

Some structures, tourist offices, communication offices, congresses organizations might already have people inhouse devoted to this activity of following informations on the internet, selecting them, posting them analyzing them..

A few start-ups involved in strategic watch are proposing their services, often too expensive

Individual curators could engage in this activity, which combines follow-up of actuality and  influence in city's policy.

But it also requires to sell this activity to mayors, administrations..

Is Curation, with Scoop.it

for Communication

Gilbert C FAURE's insight:

Communication of informations is mandatory for every body country, city, university, laboratory, company...

But what is the best support for communication?

A website is necessary, but it is hard to maintain, its format becomes quickly obsolete and often links are dying

A blog can be useful.

Being present on social networks (Facebook, Linkedin..) was also a must but it reaches only a minority of partners and as you may know half-life of information on those support is aboy half an hour.

Using Scoop. It allows to combine two options, the first to post specific informations and collect relevant informations from other sources, the other to archive this material in the cloud and find it again when required.
