Kent College History's insight:
'Under [Mao's] iron-fist rule, dancing was not just a pastime but a mandatory display of one’s undying love for the Great Helmsman. His loyalty dance, or zhongzi wu (忠字舞) in Mandarin, was a daily fixture of life in the late 1960s, just as the political strife of the Cultural Revolution started heating up and right before the blood of millions started flowing.'

Mao, Stalin, Hitler, Assad: What is a Dictator? - ValueWalk

Mao, Stalin, Hitler, Assad: What is a Dictator? - ValueWalk | IB: Authoritarian States | Scoop.it

What is a dictator, or an authoritarian? I’ll bet you think you know. But perhaps you don’t. Sure, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Zedong were dictators. So were Saddam Hussein and both Hafez and Bashar al Assad. But in many cases the situation is not that simple and stark. In many cases the reality — and the morality — of the situation is far more complex.

Looking back, how could mass murderers such as Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Idi Amin have risen to the top of political power? How could populations whose ancestors had fought for their right to vote, use their precious suffrage to allow such evil men to govern them? Brogan Campbell on the cult of personality.

In 1931, the communists established the Soviet Republic of China in the mountainous area of Jiangxi province. Three years later, surrounded and harassed by Kuomintang forces led by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, the communist leaders decided to mobilise the Red Army and take flight, thus beginning a journey that would change the fate of the Communist Party of China.

Kent College History's insight:
'Third-Front" (san xian) construction was a strategic policy in the modern history of China. In the early 1960s, in the face of a complicated international situation, to preserve the nation’s strength Chairman Mao Zedong decided to relocate many heavy industries and military factories to the southwestern and northwestern hinterland areas. This extensive industrial move was historically known as the “Third-Front Construction".'

A battle is raging in the realm of historiography
Kent College History's insight:
'Xi Jinping, China’s president, is waging war against “historical nihilism”, a peril as arcane-sounding as it is, to his mind, grave. As a state news agency recently warned, there is a “seething undercurrent” of it in China. Failure to stamp it out, officials say, could lead to Soviet-style collapse.'
