At Love Home Swap we love New York. It’s a place where seemingly anything is possible. Craving chocolate chip cookies at 3am? Get them delivered straight to your door. Need to get your dog a pedicure? A doggy spa service will take care of it. Residents of the Empire State have seen it all and aren’t easily surprised, but even the most hardened New Yorkers will be delighted by some of these weird and wonderful restaurants. From eating in the dark to dining in a haunted house, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most inventive and exciting dining experiences for your next house swap in NYC.

Looking at all the Latin American nations emerging from the bleak histories of the last few decades, few have transformed themselves into travel Meccas quite as completely and quickly as has Peru. But Peru’s metamorphosis is not quite complete. Parts of Peru remain thoroughly out of bounds for tourists. You need to tread lightly and appreciate the complexities of your host community.

There is no such thing as equality amongst the two to three hundred known species of Ploceidae, or weaver birds. Though found across Asia and in Australia, it is in East African countries such as Uganda and Ethiopia that the widest diversity of these birds is found, and also where the artistic ability for which they are known becomes most pronounced. Ploceidae are a varied family, and count among their number the most abundant bird species on Earth. But regardless of species, one thing remains constant among the weaver birds: it is only the male who does the work.

We often think of extinct animals as little more than forlorn, shabby-looking specimens that have been stuffed and preserved for display in museums; animals trapped in glass boxes as if for eternity rather than frolicking free in the wild. Yet, a few photographs were taken of the 12 extinct (or probably extinct) bird species described here before the last of their kin disappeared, meaning these snapshots have become rare treasures. Let’s remember that on this rather sad trip into the past.

Few doubt the brilliance of bird nest design, but it seems our feathered friends are just as ingenious when it comes to picking locations for their future homes. They need to be, when you consider the rate at which we're gobbling up space on our planet. Yet looking at some of the bizarre spots birds mark out as prime real estate, anyone would think this business tells you something about each bird's taste and character. f we go by the saying “the early bird catches the worm”, these chicks must have gotten up at the crack of dawn, as they’re catching big juicy worms – as well as insects – in their hungry little beaks. However, they’re not getting these snacks from the ground, of course, but courtesy of their dedicated and ever-busy parents. So, in actual fact it’s mom and dad that are the real early birds – no doubt driven by the chirping of the many hungry mouths they have to feed! As we can see from this first image, the mother garden warbler (Sylvia borin) has five hungry mouths demanding attention – and food – and what big mouths too! Somehow, each gaping red mouth seems to be almost as big as the rest of the baby bird.
