Psychiatric patients unaware of prescription drug risks

Psychiatric patients unaware of prescription drug risks | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
MANY psychiatrists are not informing people about the dangers of the long-term use of drugs they are prescribing — or about the medical problems which may develop later in life.

Author and mental health campaigner Peter Lehmann also said people who would be perfectly normal without medication were remaining in a "toxic state" because of constant medication.

Speaking at a major conference in University College Cork yesterday on the overuse of medications, Mr Lehman told an audience of 400 that, in general, people who are prescribed anti-psychotic drugs on a long-term basis are not informed about the possibility of illness such as diabetes, breast cancer and other risks.

The crumbling pillars of behavioral genetics

The crumbling pillars of behavioral genetics | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

The field of psychiatric genetics is approaching the crisis stage due to the continuing failure, despite years of concerted worldwide efforts, to identify genes presumed to underlie most mental disorders. We have been looking for the gene that causes schizophrenia since Emil Kraepelin hypothesized its existence in 1893. The belief that such genes exist is based on studies of families, twins, and adoptees.

However, Jay Joseph shows that these studies provide little if any scientifically acceptable evidence in support of behavioral genetics. In fact, researchers initial "discoveries" are rarely replicated.

As this becomes more understood, and as fruitless gene finding efforts continue to pile up, we may well be headed towards a paradigm shift in psychiatry away from genetic and biological explanations of mental disorders, and towards a greater understanding of how family, social, and political environments contribute to human psychological distress.

Dr Joseph has written two critical books on this unproductive scientific equivalent of a Snipe Hunt.

His "The Missing Gene: Psychiatry, Heredity, and the Fruitless Search for Genes" was published in 2006, and his "The Gene Illusion: Genetic Research in Psychiatry and Psychology Under the Microscope" (2003) are classic and authoritative peer review of this controversial subject.

HIV Test Fraud Liberation Day

HIV Test Fraud Liberation Day | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

It may come as a shock to realize that if everyone in the world who was supposed to be HIV positive, suddenly no longer cared about this designation, and returned the diagnosis and red ribbon to the doctor or clinician who gave it to them, that no further infections would occur, no HIV would be spread, and the entire notion of this virus would disappear entirely. What would be left in this scenario is not a world plagued by HIV infection, but a world in which many people are ill for many reasons: Poverty, pharmaceutical poisoning, street drug abuse, toxic environmental poisoning, pure starvation, filthy parasite-ridden water and fear. A fear promulgated and propagated by the AIDS medical front...

Between a Rock and a Hard Place - It's the epidemiology, stupid!

Between a Rock and a Hard Place - It's the epidemiology, stupid! | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

Science Blog on Mobile Phone Radiation and Health by Dariusz Leszczynski...

The known, to many, phrase “It’s the economy, stupid!” was brought into the politics by James Carville, adviser to the Bill Clinton 1992 presidential campaign. Since then this phrase has entered the main stream media and is used in different contexts, by replacing the word “economy” with some other term. This phrase points out to something so obvious that we not always remember of it.

Here, I have replaced the word “economy” with the word “epidemiology” to talk about the obvious reason for causing confusion among the mobile phone users and decision makers about the potential risk of mobile phone radiation-induced brain cancer. In fact, the two largest epidemiology studies are not only non-informative but they both are misleading and one of them includes such a grave error that this study should never pass through peer review of reviewers and editors and should never been published in its current form.

Psychiatric drug use spreads despite increased knowledge of risks | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

(This is a 10-minute video)

The medicating of Americans for mental illnesses continued to grow over the past decade, with one in five adults now taking at least one psychiatric drug such as antidepressants, antipsychotics and anti-anxiety medications, according to an analysis of pharmacy-claims data.

Among the most striking findings was a big increase in the use of powerful antipsychotic drugs across all ages, as well as growth in adult use of drugs for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder?a condition typically diagnosed in childhood. Use of ADHD drugs such as Concerta and Vyvanse tripled among those aged 20 to 44 between 2001 and 2010, and it doubled over that time among women in the 45-to-65 group, according to the report.

Big Pharma Paying Out Huge Fraud Settlements

Big Pharma Paying Out Huge Fraud Settlements | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

The cost of doing business for big pharma is rising – dramatically. And it's not because of research and development of new blockbusters to cure cancer, alleviate pain...

Glaxo’s shares have barely moved since the Nov. 3 announcement of the huge settlement, and its shares are up more than 3% from a year ago. Merck’s shares we down 50 cents, or 1.48%, Wednesday. But that had little (if anything) to do with Tuesday’s announcement and everything to do with another broad market selloff tied to Europe’s debt crisis.

The fines levied against big pharma have gotten markedly bigger in recent years, perhaps growing in direct proportion to the industry’s desperate need to generate additional revenues. Profit growth has stalled over the past five years as, one after another, the companies have lost huge revenues as patents have expired on blockbuster drugs and competition from cheaper generic products has eaten away market share.

That loss of revenue has created intense pressure on companies like Merck, Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline to either come up with new blockbusters or wring every last nickel out of the blockbusters they still market.

Our bold & innovative ideas for increasing vaccine uptake are;

1. Conducting independent and unbiased vaccine safety research, both short term and long term, and also research on safety about the combined effect of various vaccines given to the children.

2. Compare the health of vaccinated vs non vaccinated children.

3. Identify all cases of vaccine induced deaths and damage.

4. Compensate parents of those children who died because of vaccines...

Breakthrough in malaria research looks to body's immune cells

Breakthrough in malaria research looks to body's immune cells | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
Groundbreaking research from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research is set to pave the way for the development of new malaria drugs and vaccines.

Traditionally, it was believed the parasite’s development in the body was restricted to the liver and red blood cells.

Dr Wykes’ research, undertaken over several years, provides a major breakthrough in our understanding of the malaria parasites.

Dr Wykes said the findings open up a whole new approach to developing drugs and vaccines targeting the infection in the spleen.

“Our research has discovered how white blood cells called dendritic cells, malfunction and shield the malaria parasite from the body’s immune attack.

“Dendritic cells normally function like generals of an army, giving orders to the body’s immune cells to fight infection,” Dr Wykes said.

“The system usually works brilliantly. However, the problem with malaria is that the disease has found a way to block dendritic cells from doing their work, meaning that the disease over-rides our immune responses. And therefore, people get sick.”

A group of scientists is pushing to publish research about how they created a man-made flu virus that could potentially wipe out civilisation.

The deadly virus is a genetically tweaked version of the H5N1 bird flu strain, but is far more infectious and could pass easily between millions of people at a time.

The research has caused a storm of controversy and divided scientists, with some saying it should never have been carried out.

The current strain of H5N1 has only killed 500 people and is not contagious enough to cause a global pandemic.

But their are fears the modified virus is so dangerous it could be used for bio-warfare, if it falls into the wrong hands.

The Real Causes of Shaken Baby Syndrome That Mainstream Media Fail To Tell You

A recent article in a UK newspaper suggested that about half of parents convicted of shaken baby syndrome (SBS) have been wrongly accused. However, a thorough investigation of all the scientific evidence shows that the real percentage of wrongly convicted people could be much higher than this.

What is extremely disturbing from the evidence is that these injuries can be caused by a combination of multiple vaccinations and other conditions that rapidly absorb the baby’s store of vitamin C, or to give it its correct name ascorbic acid, to the point of creating infantile scurvy.

Although you may be aware of the disease called scurvy, you may think it was something that only sailors suffered on their long sea voyages in the 18th century and that it was cured when they had adequate fresh food, specifically including limes or lemons.

However, the story is more complex and is still relevant today, for a lack of ascorbic acid can result in a variety of symptoms that are mistakenly attributed to other causes and, even more worryingly, sub-clinical scurvy is far more prevalent than is generally acknowledged by the mainstream medical establishment...

Australian journalist wins prestigious award for exposing flu vaccine scandal | The Refusers | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

Natasha Bita, a journalist for The Australian has just won a Walkley Award (the Australian equivalent of a Pulitzer Prize) for an in-depth article series on the CSL Afluria flu vaccine, a shot that caused convulsions in one percent of Australian infants who received it.

To put this vaccine scandal in perspective, the CDC states that ‘seizures can occur after vaccination,’ 33% of infants who have a first seizure will have more seizures and 10% of infants who have one seizure can develop epilepsy. According to the Merck Manual (the largest-selling medical textbook), seizures are a symptom of encephalitis, which the Merck Manual defines as a vaccine adverse reaction. Vaccine-induced encephalitis can leave a spectrum of permanent brain damage in its wake – post-encephalitic syndrome (aka epilepsy and autism). In other words, kids that have convulsions from Afluria can have lifelong neurological disabilities.

Incredibly, the defective CSL flu vaccine Afluria is still on the market in the US: FDA-approved and CDC-recommended.

International Aids Day Special

Listening to medical propaganda, one would think a retrovirus is a very bad thing - something to be killed immediately wherever it is found. But nothing could be further from the truth.

Just like cholesterol has been condemned as "bad" and this lie has given rise to a billion-dollar industry of useless and even damaging cholesterol lowering (statin) drugs, so have retrovira been condemned, giving rise to a billion-dollar industry of Aids research and pharmaceutical intervention, to cocktails of "anti-retroviral" drugs they tell us are a must for anyone reacting to that very unspecific test that shows up stressed proteins associated with HIV. The retrovirus being targeted, HIV, incidentally has never been shown to do anything that could be construed as destroying the human immune system. As a matter of fact, it seems to be a necessary component of healing wounds and lesions, as Cal Crilly has discovered.

Cal is one of the few people who are able and willing to look at these details. His latest brainchild is a question: "Is HIV to be found just in lesions?"

Good reading!

USA: More Parents Are Opting Out of Vaccines

USA: More Parents Are Opting Out of Vaccines | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
A study of exemption rates by the Associated Press finds that more and more parents are skipping required vaccines for their children, often out of fear that shots do more harm than good.

More than half of all states have seen an increase in the number of exemptions and in eight states, mostly in the Northwest and Midwest, the percentage of kids not getting the full recommendation of shots is over 5 percent.

Doctors cite many reasons for the rise in requested exemptions, one of which is that it is simply easier than it used to be to opt out. In many places, parents who wish to enroll their kids in kindergarten without the required shots simply need to check a box on a form (which can be easier than taking their kids to the doctor.) Other cite religious reasons or the sheer volume of shots, which has increased with the development of new vaccines, like the one for chickenpox.

One of the biggest concerns remains the fear that vaccines cause autism or other development disorders...

So What Does it Mean that Studies Reveal that Moderate Drinkers Are Healthier than Teetotalers? | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
We all know that drinking too much can be bad for us; but did you know that drinking too little could be hazardous?

I don't want to go to rehab, but a raft of recent studies show that moderate alcohol consumption lowers our risks for many dire conditions including heart disease, stroke, gallstones, diabetes and dementia. Some studies even suggest that the answer to pesky menopause symptoms comes in six-packs and goes great with pretzels.

The keyword here is "moderate." Some studies define this as one drink per week; others as up to four drinks per day. This haziness notwithstanding, these studies show that heavy drinkers are far more likely than moderate drinkers to die from certain diseases.

But so are people who don't drink at all.

It's a bell curve. But while one half of the bell is well, duh, the other half -- the half involving abstinence -- is pretty shocking. In study after study, abstainers get sick and die sooner and in larger numbers than moderate drinkers.

A study published this summer found that women who consume one drink daily and men who consume two drinks daily are 23 percent less likely than nondrinkers to develop Alzheimer's disease...

10 Natural Tips To Boost Immunity This Winter

10 Natural Tips To Boost Immunity This Winter | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
Flu season is headed our way and in a few weeks many will suffer, but you don't have to be one of them if you start boosting immunity now.

Adequate levels of Vitamin D are essential for our immune systems to function the way it is designed to. Unfortunately, there are no significant dietary sources of Vitamin D -- most of our intake comes from exposure to sunlight. To optimize your Vitamin D levels, you'll need to take a Vitamin D3 supplement daily. This is the most important step you can take to prevent the flu!

To find out how much Vitamin D you'll need, get your 25 hydroxy Vitamin D level checked by your doctor. If that's not an option, you can self-test your level with ZRT labs. For optimal health, you'll want your level to be between 50 and 70ng/ml. It may require several months of taking 5,000 - 10,000 IU of Vit D3 daily (especially during winter) under a doctor's supervision to achieve this -- but it will be well worth the effort.

- - -

A reader and friend on facebook added an 11th tip, which we might consider, in addition to the ten in the Huffington Post article: Vitamin C - The Healing Factor

http://www.vitamincfoundation.org/healing.html

and she added: "A good boost of vitamin C will also help. Humans do not make their own vitamin C, unlike most other animals, so we have to make sure it is part of our diet. We may no longer suffer from scurvy but there is evidence of health problems related to subclinical scurvy."

Big Pharmaceutical Companies Are Hiring Ghostwriters

Big Pharmaceutical Companies Are Hiring Ghostwriters | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
Did you know that Big Pharmaceutical Companies or Big Pharma support the practice of "ghostwriting" articles published in medical journals?

One of the more flagrant offenses committed by pharmaceutical companies and the medical profession is the practice of "ghostwriting" medical articles.

A new cross-sectional survey found that more than 20 percent of articles published in six leading medical journals during 2008 were likely written by honorary- and/or ghost writers.

This is lower than it was in 1996, but still far too common for comfort.

For medical journals, ghostwriting usually refers to writers sponsored by a drug or medical device company, who make major but uncredited research- or writing contributions.

The articles are instead published under the names of academic authors.

Such "inappropriate authorship" leads to a lack of transparency and accountability, which has become an important concern

ONE DRUG TO MAKE YOU HAPPY - La Leva di Archimede (ENG) | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

Psychiatric drugs are big sellers. They are among the best selling drugs made. In 2010, Americans or their insurers doled out some $16.1 billion for anti-psychotics; $11.6 billion for anti-depressants; and $7.2 billion for ADHD treatments.

Within the last two decades the field of psychiatry has mushroomed from a fringe body of Sigmund Freud admirers to a mainstream player in the field of medical pharmacology, largely because of an unseemly union between that profession and the drug industry, leading to the creation of many never before known disease states and profitable ways to exploit those alleged diseases with psychiatric services and drugs.

Important Advantage from Actually Getting Flu?

Important Advantage from Actually Getting Flu? | Health Supreme | Scoop.it

Infectious Disease News has posted a report of a paper, "H1N1 pandemic less severe among adults with history of flu." The paper suggests that people with preexisting antibodies to different H1N1 strains had more immunity to swine flu H1N1 than those without. Getting a flu infection (whether or not you actually get sick... since the majority of people with influenza infections show few if any symptoms) leaves you with long-lived antibodies, and many more of them, than someone has who got vaccine. And they protect against similar strains, which flu vaccine usually fails to do.

This might explain the data from Canada and Hong Kong (that I have blogged about several times) which showed that receiving flu vaccine in 2008 led to almost double the likelihood of getting sick from swine flu in 2009. In other words, the unvaccinated from the previous flu season fended off swine flu much better than the previous season's vaccinated people did.

This means that catching the garden variety flu could protect you in future from the much-anticipated, threatening Pandemic Flu. And the protection could be expected to last for many decades. Vaccine protection only lasts months, or a year or two. Maybe your body makes lemonade out of flu lemons.

Scientists discover secret of limb regeneration: It's a genetic trick using acid from vitamin A | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
A team of researchers from the University of Konstanz in Germany claim they have worked out exactly how the zebrafish (pictured) uses a special acid to re-grow parts of its body.

Scientists have finally discovered how some animals can regenerate amputated limbs or damaged organs after three decades of research.

While it was understood that retinoic acid played a part in the tropical freshwater fish's ability to rebuild its fins and even heart muscles, the team found it was a critical element.

A team of researchers from the University of Konstanz in southern Germany claim they have solved the riddle after studying a master in the art of limb regeneration - the zebrafish.

Researchers found that the fish uses a special genetic trick that allows the acid to control the formation of blastema, which means the animal is able to produce a store of cells that can rebuild the fin.

Retinoic acid is produced by animals, including humans, from vitamin A and can activate the necessary genes for regeneration.

New Zealand Becomes Codex Alimentarius Incarnate: Food As Commodity, Not Nourishment

New Zealand Becomes Codex Alimentarius Incarnate: Food As Commodity, Not Nourishment | Health Supreme | Scoop.it
ShareTweet Proposed New Zealand legislation—thus far sliding through the legislative process like a greased pig—will force controls on food production that can only favor multinational growers and threaten the existence of all small operations.

With the implementation of Food Bill 160-2, massive new powers, including powers of arrest, will be given to “food safety officers”, who can be members of the private sector. That means employees of Monsanto could be authorized to conduct raids. Worse, they will be given immunity from criminal and civil prosecution for any acts during those raids. Even marae, communal and sacred places, will be subject to their actions. Warrants will not be required so there will be no need for evidence of a crime, meaning anyone could be raided at any time…and there will be no recourse, no matter how egregious their acts.

The purpose of the bill—as stated by New Zealand Food Safety Authority—is to bring New Zealand into line with Codex Alimentarius provisions.
