Only looking at statistics may cause workplaces to assume that their workplace is safe, however this may be because workers become rather good at doing what they do and managing the risks within the workplace. Low statistics does not make a safe workplace.

This was an avoidable accident that did not need to happen, they were warned about the machine but still did nothing, which has lead to this man loosing his fingers and has had an impact on his mental well-being. People who blatantly ignore health and safety warnings should not be in business.

No helmet, no steel cap boots, no shirt. This screams danger. This photo captured on a construction site in Vietnam highlights the need for evidence based education about workplace health and safety in developing countries. I chose to critique this photo as I would like to be in the position where I could travel to different countries to teach about safety in construction. Vietnam is a country I would like to work in and explore, throughout my future career as a workplace health and safety officer. I believe that workplace health and safety practices should be standardised across the world. Construction workers in Vietnam have the right to work in safe work environments surrounded by culturally sensitive practices and education.

This incident was a result of ignorance to OHS procedures. To be charged with three breaches to regulations under the Health and Safety at Work Act is unacceptable. Having no adequate emergency plans and failing to conduct risk assessments demonstrates a disregard for OHS in the workplace. The consequences of this resulted in two unnecessary deaths. The implementation of a safety coordinator and a management system will be the best thing for this business. I personally found this particular article upsetting as I believe OHS is important to helping people stay safe and live their lives, and in this case two lives were lost. |
Time to get these recycling plants safe !
