For many years liquidation been a common con' trick in the building and construction industries to avoid responsibilities, it now seems to be spreading almost like a computer virus.

The scam is so called directors are given big fat salaries and expenses, this is basically to keep their eyes, ears and mouths shut like three wise monkeys. The business is then manipulated and kept afloat on loans and late payments to suppliers and worker alike. They eventually manipulate the business into liquidation to avoid paying any fines, legal or other liabilities and the wise monkeys continue to be paid off but by other means.

We are lead to believe if an employee is fined, they themselves have to accept any fine levied and the consequences personally. Why then are directors not also forced to accept any fine levied and consequences personally for controlling or indeed failing to control their companies or businesses in a safe, healthy and responsible manner. To put the crime on the company or business is a clear a get out of jail free card and the same goes for any fines levied. Even if businesses don’t go into liquidation, directors nor bosses bear the cost of fines. They are passed on to employees, consumers, suppliers, investors and lenders etc., none of whom are the guilty party. The same is true of public bodies. Whilst there is a clear argument that compensation should be claimed via the companies or business, they can no more be guilty of a crime than a motor vehicle. It is those in charge of the vehicle (directors) that are guilty and should be made personal responsible and possibly held liable if they have the collateral. Companies nor businesses do not commit crimes, even if genuinely committed on behalf of the company, they are committed by individuals that run them.

Man fighting for his life following van crash | Health and safety at work | Scoop.it

A man is fighting for his life in hospital following a crash.

Three people travelling in a white van were injured after the vehicle crashed in Narborough Road, Leicester, at about 4.30am yesterday.

UCATT Branch Sec''s comment September 6, 2011 10:45 AM

“This would seem on the face of it yet another serious work related incident that will not be investigate as such. Why? Quite possibly road transport is the biggest killer of all industries but escapes investigation as such. Many of our member are expected to drive long distance in vans on top a heavy workload in appalling conditions. Most firms are fully aware of this yet never take any account of the dangers. The usual attitude is if it didn't happen on site it is no concern of ours. I am not saying that's what happened here, the sad thing is that angle is unlikely to be looked into.
I believe it is time all serious work related incident should be look into and be reported on by the H&SE regardless of police involvement.

Health and safety myths debunked

The government has been at it again this week, digging up the most bizarre examples of supposed health and safety excuses to make its case for scrapping laws that provide protection for millions of workers across Britain.

Ministers published a list of what they claimed were the most bizarre bans linked to health and safety rules, which were being wrongly used to "curtail people's personal freedoms," including kite-flying, playground games and sports days which they claim have all been hit by an "epidemic" of health and safety excuses, which should be challenged by the public.

Ivan Timson's comment, September 4, 2011 2:53 PM
It's right we need to challenge the 'elf and safety' gone mad stories. However there is not one example of workplace health & safety in their bizarre list, yet they want to deregulate workplace health & safety because they consider it a 'burden on business'. It is not a burden. Done properly it not only protects workers but can be profitable for business. Every worker has the right to a safe workplace and union workplaces are safer. Join the union and fight back before its too late.
The Unions need to become organised on H&S and get active on all fronts. If we are going to stop this.
This government are tackling h&s first. Then they will have a go at our workers right. Maternity pay, holidays etc.

Cameron Blames Riots On Human Rights And Health And Safety Legislation

Cameron Blames Riots On Human Rights And Health And Safety Legislation | Health and safety at work | Scoop.it

Following the riots in several English cities last week, David Cameron has vowed to get tough on the causes of the riots, and has already identified two major causes: The Human Rights Act and Health And Safety legislation.

UCATT Branch Sec''s comment August 19, 2011 6:31 PM
What p***** would publicly vow to get tough on law breakers, whilst being openly hell bent on getting rid of as much legislation and enforcement as he possible can. Is the man supposed to be a Prime Minister or comedian. Whilst he is obviously two faced, is jokes are in poor taste as well as his so called leadership and policies.

Union hails fast-track work death process

Construction union Ucatt welcomed proposals today to speed up the justice process when someone is killed at work.

Currently when a death occurs it can often take between four to five years for the company responsible to be convicted.

G. L. Taylor's comment, August 19, 2011 6:40 PM
I thought the government was doing as much as it could to fast track the worker death. The figures have certainly gone up since they got into power and that after their H&SE as ignored the industries with the highest death rate.

Wards to close to help tackle NHS overspend | Health and safety at work | Scoop.it

Some wards are to be closed for up to six weeks as part of cost-cutting measures at Leicester hospitals.

Two assessment units at Leicester General Hospital have already been merged and some beds at Glenfield Hospital are being used for day cases rather than patients being admitted.

G. L. Taylor's comment, September 6, 2011 10:49 AM
“It seems apparent the NHS is being sabotaged by people at the top, who obviously believe more in the private sector principle of, maximum achievable executive remuneration for minimum input at the expense of service users and employees.

Worker survives fireball blast after gas pipe is severed | Health and safety at work | Scoop.it

A workman survived a fireball blast when a gas pipe was accidentally severed yesterday.

He and a colleague were laying cable in the centre of Asfordby, near Melton, when the gas main was ignited – sending a ball of flame 40 feet into the air.

“Someone nearly losses their life in a serious work related incident and the only comments on Leicester Mercury's web-site concern semantics. How about being concerned about what went wrong and why. Hopefully the work was being carried out by experienced operative working under supervision of an experience national company that specialises in such work. If not why not and does no mention of an investigation by the H&SE mean no one else cares.”

Cameron's 'callous' riot remarks cause anger

Campaigners labelled David Cameron "crass and insulting" today after he claimed that the recent riots had their roots in an "obsession" with health and safety legislation.

The Prime Minister used a speech this week to attack what he claimed was the "obsession with health and safety that has eroded people's willingness to act according to common sense."

UCATT Branch Sec''s comment August 19, 2011 12:35 PM
What we must realise is that for many years, instead of electing MP's and others with good honest guts, to represent us against the rich and powerful, organisation and individuals that buy and sell countries, We have elected those that actually belong to such groups or wish to affiliate to them (I mean suck up but don’t wish to be impolite). Unfortunately the latter includes a considerable number of so called Labour Politicians, Senior Union Officers and a strong if unrepresentative section of the media.

Much of the middle class as allowed itself to be conned with high living styles (private education health care, business class travel etc.) paid for by credit and inflation and supported by the selling off of manufacturing and production jobs to those countries that made the cheapest bid. Those same countries are now finding their workers, not unreasonably wish to enjoy the benefits of their work. Many such countries accept you don't sell of forms of income to gamble, even be it on the stock market; you just have to bit the bullet, negotiate and pay up.

Odd though that much of our media and so many politicians seemed to speak out with relish about rioting, looting etc. against other country’s oligarchic structures of government (even though they also attacked middle class, caused death injury and serious damage to businesses) yet they condemned our riots as just greedy looters.

What’s even odder, he and his quisling having the bloody cheek to condemn stealing just when it has come to light those in the top 10% income class stole the whole of 30 years Gross National Product (GNP). That means not only did they steal from their sworn enemies in the lower class but duped their friend in the middle class also.

I will agree all thieves should face jail if and only if starting with the biggest thieves first.

That should sort out a large number of business wo/men and politicians for some time and allow the least corrupt plenty of time to sort out corruption and get some real moral fibre back into our society.
