$50,000 Fall Sprint leaves fans wanting more

$50,000 Fall Sprint leaves fans wanting more | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

Fans attending the first round heats on September 21st were treated to exciting qualifiers in the 7th annual stakes series at Derby Lane. They saw a win streak produce a new top dog; a fastest first round time; a “cruzing” finish, and a cool victory.

Red Oak Racing’s Flying Sebastian (BD’s Grayson x Flying Witness) kicked off the night with an exciting come from behind finish. The bet favorite didn’t disappoint his fans as he scored top points and a fifth in a row top grade win. Sebastian’s win broke the four-way tie for the “top dog” and moved him into the solo spot on top with 10 wins this season for trainer Alex Hall. Sebastian’s victory also halted the streak of the season’s fastest sprinter Craigie Beck (Cal Holland) that gave a winning effort and took second place. Third through eighth were Citizen’s Arrest (D’Arcy), Rams Contango (Marsella), Kaias Buttercup (Floyd & Porter), CRT Yakisha (Campbell Greyhound), Kay Big Blind (Patriot) and Drew A Winner (Alabama).

NGA’s 40th Annual Pup Giveaway

You’ll recall last year that two of the three pup prizes in the NGA’s summer Pup Giveaway Campaign to aid the Greyhound Hall Of Fame were sired by then-recent Hall Of Fame inductee Kiowa Sweet Trey.

Well, this time around the focus is on Flying Penske, who—it was recently announced—will be one of those enshrined in the Hall Of Fame during ceremonies at the upcoming Fall Meet. Penske, as it turns out, is the paternal grandsire of two of this year’s three prizes.

"Manhatin" climbs the ladder at Southland Park

"Manhatin" climbs the ladder at Southland Park | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

The summer heat was still a few weeks away in West Memphis, Arkansas, but a young pup debuted in official schooling that brought his own brand of heat.  You might have been able to predict it from this Northshore Kennel young star, but “Manhatin” (Kelsos Fusileer x Bakin) exploded on the scene in early June with a dominating 15 length romp in his very first official schooling race.  Three days later, the white and brindle male proved it was no fluke by easily handling another schooling field by seven lengths pulling away.

Flying The Who gave the AJN kennel its second Ebro Derby success when she outpointed a strong field on Saturday night. In a year when the 3/8ths class at Ebro was very even, Flying The Who emerged in the last two months of the season to stamp her authority on 627 yard racing culminating in her Derby success.

Flying The Who dominated the betting, starting a pronounced 3/5 favorite and after a brief tussle with Kelsos Que Sera for the lead in the early stages, drew clear over the latter half of the race to win easily in 36.79.

Only one of the responses was correct.

Howard Moshinsky of Howell, NJ, correctly identified the person in the 1940 photo, standing in front of a then-being-constructed Raynham Park, as Ted Lippold.

Greyhound racing report disputes industry viability

A group advocating for the end of greyhound racing believes a newly created report clearly shows the industry faces tough economic prospects, receives substantial state funding and doesn't adequately consider animal safety.

Racing supporters say the group is skewing information. They argue the racing industry is still viable, the state needs to abide by its promises and the companies that own the racing-casino-hotel establishments need to upgrade facilities.

Magic City produces derby win at Southland

Magic City produces derby win at Southland | Greyhound Racing | Scoop.it

More than likely, the vast majority of people have heard the old adage “third time’s the charm.” In the case of Randy Finegan and the Magic City Kennel, those four words never rang more true.

In the 2011 Southland Derby, Radio Spirit ran second to the All-American Shanett. Last season, after winning the Spring Futurity with Nitro Stubby, the young star ran a respectable runner-up once again to the superstar known as Bella Infrared. “When you race at a place like Southland, especially over the past couple of years, the chances of racing against All- Americans in the finals of these stakes are a given,” stated Finegan. “We just happened to have run into one of the best females to have ever raced here in Shanett and one of the best ever to have raced period in Bella Infrared.”

Daytona Beach's all-time leading winner, Gilded Sherry, will call it a career tonight (Friday, Aug. 9), following her final run in the Grade TA ninth race at the Daytona track.

Gilded Sherry, who turned 5 years old on May 2, will be gunning for her 114th career win. Her 113 wins to date rank her in a tie for 14th place on the All-Time Leading Race Winners list. A victory tonight would place in 14th place alone with 114 wins.
