Successful and productive LOCALL Multiplier Event
The UAB partner LOCALL (2019-1-DE03-KA201-060024) Multiplier Event was held online yesterday, with 47 people in attendance. Guest speaker Jessica Bradley, from the University of Sheffield first provided a theoretical overview of engaging learners with creative practices to more critically engage with the linguistic landscapes of their neighbourhoods, followed by a very example-oriented presentation by Mónica López that highlighted her own experience of LL pedagogical implementation (during and post-lockdown) and how this approach can be linked to new Catalan government educational ordinances. Melinda Dooly then presented an overview of the LOCALL project and outcomes and the evening ended with a hands-on workshop, led by Dr. Bradley, on how to analyze (and teach students to analyze) images in linguistic landscapes.

GREIP members have just finished the first round of volunteering to work with The Ítaca Campus. This is a socio-educational program, run at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and sponsored by Banco Santander. The program is aimed at youth who have completed the 3rd year of middle school who will have to choose between entering the labor market or continuing their education in either a university or vocational track itinerary. The target profile is students with good study skills who, due to their socioeconomic situation and/or lack of close adult references with higher education, are at an educational disadvantage. The programme aims to motivate and promote interest in continuing their studies. GREIP members designed five sessions to introduce the students to ethnographic studies and to provide them with empirical learning regarding the application of this approach. During the sessions the students engaged in self-biographical linguistic analysis, data collection of linguistic and cultural diversity of the UAB campus through linguistic landscape mapping and creation of output in the format of posters that aim to transform and engage others in linguistic activism. The group prepared and presented a 6-minute summary of their ethnographic work to a 100+ audience of parents and fellow Campus Ítaca participants. The first round was carried out by Melinda Dooly and Claudia Vallejo, with the help of PhD candidate, Diego Alburquerque. The next round, starting next week, will be led by Dolors Masats and Cèlia Pratginestós. Diego will be returning to support the workshops.
