You know when hiphop first emerged (Rapper Delight...) It was all about the story framed by hot breaks. In today’s music it seems like its about the breaks and the verbiage is the frame (how does that work?) Well, when I’m going through new artists and I really hear something new and special (and that’s rare...). I get excited off of really new and fresh talent. Lady London is one of those finds.
Lady London is a story teller, a hiphop griot if you may and boy is she good (Inayah Lamas is also fire with this style...). This cut “Lisa’s Story” caught my eye on youtube and I was impressed. She tells a New York Love tale, (both good and bad...) Can Lady London make the next “Children’s Story” like Slick Rick. I think she can and I feel like she will. Until them I’ll just enjoy her current joints on the Tube. Check her out on youtube

You know sometimes we forget that hiphop is represented in many forms, not just music. It’s sometimes most iconic form of expression is through photo and no one was able to share hiphops moments like Chi Modu.

Man, sometimes these industry folks are really gassing folks up on their artist and the real is their artist really ain’t selling. You see to be in business, what you sold is the way you keep score (for the record streams are not sales...) I see to many artist gassed up on the fantasy of doing business in the music world and the music business wind up doing the artist. You gotta have sales.
I cannot emphasize this enough, sales matter. It’s the real way you keep score. Real sales numbers add value to artist and at time can be the difference in the success or failure in an artist career. You can’t get paid on fantasy numbers (unless you’re betting on Fan Duel...
So, get real fans to buy so you can see real fan support and real money...
No its not payola, its positioning. Radio as in any business has inventory and that inventory is the time slots on air. When radio gives up 3 minutes to an artist they basically are giving away 3 minutes of that inventory (that you can't replace. You can't replace time) So the labels take (for the lack of a better word) their place in the line of records to be added by backing station endorsements and contest (which is a plausible business practice). The more you spend or support the stations efforts, the further up that cut line you can be (ie you support me, I support you...). licensing groups made it worse by trying to overcharge the stations with licensing fees so the stations started charging to get on the cut list because they felt they were being overcharged (extorted) by BMI, sesac and ascap for airplay licensing fees (in reality the licensing groups created this animal and the artist and the labels were handed the tab. (Licensing groups are like girlfriends who know everything except how to put anything on the tab.) In reality most artist would do better by just buying ads on air in a serious ad campaign like any other business, but if they did that a lot of the middleman culprit power brokers in the music business would be out of business. Buy you an ad campaign like any other business and if your product is truly market worthy, it will stand on its on. You aint gotta sell good dope, good dope sells it self
When I first heard the cut “Rapper’s Delight” by the SugarHill Gang, I realized that the impact of this new style of music was going to huge (and it was...) What was this new music where people were talking over a beat and why does this energy feel so right? Well over the years HipHop grew into a massive industry and the hits just kept on coming. As I look at this shot of the HipHop yearbook I ask myself, how did hiphop change these young peoples lives? I mean what would Onika Maraj or Jay Jenkins be doing now? Would they have families and careers outside of music. Would Pharrell Williams or Curtis Jackson be firemen or corporate executives? Would O’Shea Jackson or Melissa Elliott be teachers at some public school (can yall imagine some one calling Ice Cube ‘Mr. Jackson’ lsmh).
HipHop had a huge impact on these fresh faces in this yearbook shot. Hiphop made them legends. forever their name will always be with the world because of the music they created and the genre of music they represented. They became the new class of urban entrepreneurs that made other’s young and old feel like they could make it also and dreams do come true. And you know what, that’s a good thing.

At number 1 this week is J Cole PRIDE IS THE DEVIL ft Lil Baby (this is another J Cole classic) At this point we’re used to J Cole doing great songs (we expect it...). In a time when great hooks and narratives seem to be a thing of the past in these new hiphop songs, J Cole always delivers on a thoughtful and well put together track (here’s another one...) The Lil Baby as a feature is a timely and pleasant surprise as Lil Baby continues to stretch himself as an artist (this is a great feature for him...) Lil Baby has to be the most over achieving underdog in hiphop. Noone (except P Thomas...) would have ever dreamed that this dude would be here right now. This song score rated 109.2 and a grade of A+. Urban radio probably will be slow on this cut (they shouldn’t be... #ItsAboutTheMoney ) but this cut is a solid cut for all day parts in urban radio and should get spins. This ones a winner.
At number 2 this weeks is DMX WALKING IN THE RAIN ft Nas(man if you love the classic DMX then this is the cut for you...) This cut is that DMX that has you riding in your car reflecting on your life and ways. DMX was so inspiring as a HipHop minister sharing with his fan's insights on growth and personal stories with his battles with his demons. To me DMX gave messages like no other hiphop artist and he will be truly missed. This song score rated 100.8 and a grade of A+. This is another cut that should get some Urban radio (even if it’s just some post humous respect, but once again... #ItsAboutTheMoney It already seems like the industry folks are pushing BATH SALTS, but this is the cut #FRFR ) Put your earbuds in and rock this cut while you work out. You won’t be mad.
At number 3 is another great new cut from DMX with a very interesting collab and feature with Bono (man if X was still alive this cut would have been huge with him and Bono performing this cut live... #NoDoubt ) DMX SKYSCRAPERS ft Bono is straight “slapping”. The energy on this cut is crazy (with a great breakbeat intro... #DjAlert) and is the right blend of Hiphop/Rock/Pop that comes together as refreshing and motivating as a cut about “the skys the limits...” This cuts score rated a 93.6 with a grade of A. No doubt X will be missed but songs like this with Bono will carry his name forever.

This dumb broad Candace Owens (with her Sally Hemmings complex is an attention seeking idiot. To imply a rapper, Cardi B could topple the American empire is really stupid because America isn't an empire. Its a functioning republic if it has to be defined. Not massive inflation and debt caused by crises, pandemics, massive incompetence in both Washington & Wall Street. A Rapper (yall...) a girl who used the term "Schmoney Moves" as her call to action. Yeah she's gonna destroy America and its values. If that's the case then America needs to be destroyed because it seems to be very vulnerable to stupidity (Candice Owens not Cardi...) Like her or not, Cardi B is Hip Hops greatest Horatio Alger story. For real, noone but a select few believed in this girl, She used her own money to get on and dealt with all the cons and bullshit like a soldier (can you imagine how many folks tried to get some ass to put Cardi on..."? #FRFR). Cardi may well be the only reason the world's media money still even has an interest in segments of the HipHop community (she massively sold out her reebok shoe line like an NBA player). Never have I heard Cardi make a crazy statement, she may have at times not articulated things in the best way but she has never said something stupid about something that matters or is important. Candace Owens is the worst type of self culture hating race baiter. Remember this is a girl who parents had to moved out of a school because she was accusing people at the school of racially harnessing her and her parents got a decent settlement from that school system. Now she is the champion of white culture and the despiser of what she considers the wrong ideas from urban culture. If anything, Cardi has shown a lot of folks that no matter who stands against it. "Good Dope sells itself" and Cardi B folks to the world buying community is that good dope. Like it or not, the numbers (the money...) speaks for itself
