Call for Abstrcats] 3rd International Forum on Agri-Food Logistics & IV National Scientific Conference AGROLOGISTYKA Poznań, Poland, June 26-28, 2019 | #Ciheambari #Alumni #FTN #NCA

Theme and background
"The strategy of sustainable development, although widely accepted, during implementation in entire supply chains, still faces many emerging problems. This is particularly manifested in supply chains that include many intermediaries using different norms and quality standards. Such chains are undoubtedly the agri-food supply chains (AFSCs). Achieving sustainability for these chains, regardless of the country in which they are organized, seems to be a priority, which is determined by two issues, i.e. ensuring food security of the country and the production of healthy food and very large and often undervalued environmental impact of this type of production. Scientific research indicates that logistics processes are a huge burden for environmental sustainability. ..."

The goal of the research that will be carried out by the candidate is the development and/or improvement of algorithms exploiting satellite data for assimilation into crop growth models in support of irrigation management. The work is carried out within the international ERANETMED project “Real time soil moisture forecast for smart irrigation” (RET-SIF) with partners from Italy, France, Morocco, Spain and China. Crop models will be employed to determine the crop development stage and yield according to water availability, irrigation practices and crop types. The models employed will include a recently released open-source version of Aquacrop (Foster et al., 2017, http://aquacrops.com), and the Simple Algorithm for Yield prediction, SAFY (www.cesbio.ups-tlse.fr/fr/modeles/safy_et_safye_new.html). These models will be calibrated and validated over the different case studies areas. The models will be coupled to a hydrological model and remote sensing data assimilation procedures (LAI, LST) will be implemented for sharing pixel soil moisture, biophysical variables retrieved from remote sensing and meteorological data between crop and soil water balance modelling.

Europe steps up fight to stop deadly olive tree disease | Euronews
Just under five years ago olive oil producers in Italy and other southern Europe countries started to notice that some of their olive trees were dying. They were becoming dried out and twisted. Some sort of disease was attacking the trees, some of them hundreds of years old, transforming landscapes and threatening an ancient agricultural activity that has sustained communities for centuries. On the Forestaforte plantation in Ugento in the south of Italy 4000 olive trees used to thrive. It has been in the same Italian family for almost five hundred years. Then, just a few years ago, bacteria, since identified as Xylella Fastidiosa, started to attack the trees, drying them up and killing them slowly. "My output has plunged by around 80 percent in just three years," olive oil producer Giovanni Melcarne told Euronews. "This disease has completely destroyed the landscape and our production system. Any eventual recovery will be very slow." The ruined plantation is now an experimental field for researchers and students from Europe, Northern Africa, the Middle East and Iran. They are involved in an European research project aimed at establishing early diagnostic tools and sharing knowledge to tackle the problem. "The sooner you can identify the disease, the more guarantees you have to face it," explained Maroun el Moujabber, an agronomist with the Cure-XF project. "So this is the first thing we are doing. The second thing is to share scientific knowledge. Because this fight against the disease must be multidisciplinary. We must fight it not only from a biological perspective, but also using tools from other areas like sociology, economics and biotechnology."...

Scientific research indicates that logistics processes are a huge burden for environmental sustainability. ..."

Consultancy: Environmental impact study to support Kuwait Enhanced Protected Agriculture (KEPA) initiative
Job Summary
The International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), in collaboration with the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAF), proposes to implement the Kuwait Enhanced Protected Agriculture (KEPA) initiative in order to enhance local food production in support of the food security and food sovereignty strategy of the Government of Kuwait. KEPA will promote in Kuwait a water- and energy-efficient protected agriculture system that incorporates advanced hydroponic technologies and photovoltaic energy. It will address a number of challenges currently facing protected agriculture in Kuwait, including the use of greenhouses that were made for cooler climates, excessive use of water and energy, and the overall high cost of production. In addition to engaging large, medium and small-scale farmers, KEPA will introduce small, family-scale, replicable models of the system within some peri-urban communities to demonstrate its efficacy, viability and sustainability, and encourage wide-scale adoption in such communities. The initiative will also establish a center of excellence in the Wafra area, specializing in hydroponic technologies and protected agriculture, which will act as a knowledge hub and a demonstration site for the latest technologies and applications that improve the efficiency of hydroponic horticulture. A model farm for technology transfer will also be established in the Abdally region. To validate the environmental viability of the proposed KEPA project, ICBA proposes to undertake an environmental impact assessment..Leran more: https://bit.ly/2QnTia5
