Musing on the Future of Work in 2021: It's Time For Human Capitalism

Musing on the Future of Work in 2021: It's Time For Human Capitalism | The Work In Progress Report | Scoop.it

Capitalism has been falling short. It got us a long way, when we were all pulling in the same direction, pulling ourselves out of the same ditch. But as the nation developed, society’s layers and complexity grew and wealth’s multiplier effect exaggerated differences, bifurcating economic opportunities and circumstances.

Apparent divots across an uneven playing field were exacerbated during the pandemic, ending up with a major portion of the playing surface subsiding. Capitalism’s original concept and construct is no longer appropriate or relevant for the bulk of the populace as we plan to emerge from pandemic conditions.

The economic model powering the US republic needs reconfiguration to allow us to reset and integrate a more expansive, broadly-embracing human-centric approach—perhaps best-name ‘Human Capitalism’. Recent studies show that we increase sales by focusing on our consumers with human-centric design-thinking. We are honing in on employees’ experiences as research data indicates the substantial benefits of engaging workers and supporting their well-being.

Now, looking at the big picture, why wouldn’t human-centric capitalism give us the insights and understanding we need to evolve or reset our economic model? Key points to consider include the relevant measures of ‘progress’—not just counting widgets, but happiness and quality of life as well, plus treatment of workers.

Listen to the latest ‘Transforming Work’ podcast episode in which I interview Matthew Bishop—Brooks Institute senior fellow, ex-Rockefeller Foundation, and The Economist. Matthew is applying his deep and broad understanding of economics, the Future of Work, and labor force dynamics, to develop solutions, reform capitalism, and improve the models and measurement of our working lives and progress.

Musing on 2020: A Year of Reckoning--Exposure, Emotions, and Learnings

Musing on 2020: A Year of Reckoning--Exposure, Emotions, and Learnings | The Work In Progress Report | Scoop.it

UNDENIABLE UNDERSTATEMENT – “It’s been a challenging year!” Whatever our opinions of COVID19 and associated social/business restrictions—which differ greatly—we are united in wanting 2020’s disruptions of our lives and freedoms to be OVER. We are in complete accord as we look for page-turning relief—physical, mental, and economic.

HABITS & HIGHLIGHTS. We have seen our routines thrown into disarray: significantly sped up on frontlines, as well as pivoted or crushingly stalled as we have been dramatically dispersed. The pandemic has affected lives differently, exposing the varied effects of local, regional, and national political, economic, workplace, and social controls, structures, and policies, as well as our particular cultural and personal responses.

DYNAMICS OF DISCOMFORT. At the same time, the world over, all of us have experiences ranging across grief, isolation, overwhelm, frustration, stress, unease, confusion, anger, despair and more. Raw emotions have been connecting us, allowing deep-rooted difficult issues to surface and be expressed and pain shared. Reactions have been separating us too, as we cope differently and struggle to emerge.

LEANING INTO LEARNING. During 2020, the veneers of our lives has been stripped away, leaving us more vulnerable…and human. We have learned much about ourselves and each other. Personally, we better recognize our need of and sensitivity to time and interaction with family and friends.

Professionally, we better understand: how, where, and when we and others work well; the impact of distance, boundaries, and connections for management and teams; how and where technology can help us; how interpersonal skills and relationships affect communication and collaboration; and how essential inclusive leadership is during times of change.

Leaders who embrace their teams’ diversity, emotions and situations are better-equipped to bring everyone along together, navigate uncertainties and convert challenges into opportunities. With a focus on how to transition from transactional to inclusive leadership, please click here to listen to the new episode of Transforming Work with Sophie Wade in her interview with Simone Sloan.

A RECKONING WRAP. In these last days of 2020, we can all benefit by taking time to reflect and identify critical learnings exposed over the past months and use them to craft sustainable ways to grow and emerge successfully as we look forward to putting the pandemic behind us—at last!

High-Performing Teams Need Psychological Safety. Here’s How to Create It

High-Performing Teams Need Psychological Safety. Here’s How to Create It | The Work In Progress Report | Scoop.it

The highest-performing teams have one thing in common: psychological safety — the belief that you won’t be punished when you make a mistake. Studies show that psychological safety allows for moderate risk-taking, speaking your mind, creativity, and sticking your neck out without fear of having it cut off — just the types of behavior that lead to market breakthroughs. So how can you increase psychological safety on your own team?

Sophie Wade's insight:

Empathy is at the heart of trust and psychological safety. These are essential to create the foundation for great teamwork and especially important for all teams during COVID19 times of uncertainty and stress.
