This Week's Muse - What Matters? "Who" Matters. The Human-Centered New Era of Work

Omicron has sent us reeling again. We knew we would see more variants, but we also hoped and ignored and forgot. We tried to revert to previous, stable, predictable routines. Now we are being buffeted by new uncertainties.

Of course. It’s human nature to find lingering unpredictability unsettling. Mostly, we don’t deal well with too many unknowns for prolonged periods. Of course we are concerned about what this new variant could mean in terms of the economy, restrictions, business prospects, and our upcoming family holiday plans. Moreover, when we are stressed the most evolved part of our brains cannot operate at full capacity and allow us to perform at our best, while distracting worries also reduce our available attention.

However, we must all engage to make the major adjustments necessary to adapt to our new highly-digitized, faster-paced Future-of-Work environments and figure out ways through or around supply chain disruptions. Leaders are necessarily shifting attention and energy to nurture talent by fostering empathetic work environments grounded by human-centric values. Managers are needing to empower employees on the front-line enabling their increased responsiveness to customers’ changing behaviors and needs.

The new era of work is human-centric—with stronger, trust-based relationships connecting and supporting us so we can each contribute as much as possible, solving more complex problems in multi-person project situations under less certain conditions. When we recognize and lean into our essential human nature, we can prepare and plan properly, step in or boost each other when needed, and anticipate—rather than be derailed by—the need to switch to contingency plans.

Listen to my latest podcast episode interviewing Mikael Sorensen, CEO of Handelsbanken UK. He shares compelling insights about the human-centric culture and values at the bank which result in a trust-based, highly decentralized approach that empowers employees in the branches who own the customer relationships. With the focus on talent, Handelsbanken’s system creates value for all stakeholders—a model that is necessarily gaining traction in this new era of work. Listen here.

Why Optimizing Employee Performance Is The Future Of Work

Why Optimizing Employee Performance Is The Future Of Work | The Work In Progress Report | Scoop.it
However, rather than trying to find a prescriptive answer to the problem, companies instead need to look at the situation from an employee's perspective. Every individual’s needs are different, and these change over time, so organizations need to create a flexible and adaptable structure.
Sophie Wade's insight:

"Performance, not location, should drive decisions". Now THAT is logical! Performance metrics still need work and everyone needs equitable access, support, and opportunities, but we are going in the right direction.

Empathy Works: The Key to Competitive Advantage in the New Era of Work - by Sophie Wade

Empathy Works: The Key to Competitive Advantage in the New Era of Work - by Sophie Wade | The Work In Progress Report | Scoop.it

We are in a period of change. We need to think and act differently. The new world of work is significantly more digitized and decentralized than before―a transformation accelerated by the COVID-19 crisis. We need to orient ourselves differently to be successful, shifting from transactional to human-centric management, mindsets, and methods to deal with the faster pace of business developments, continuing uncertainties, more complex issues, and an increase in multidimensional projects.

Sophie Wade's insight:

My apologies for being MIA for a few months. I have been finishing up the manuscript for my second book which has consumed most of my time and energy. I believe passionately in the need for more empathy in the workplace so we can work together more effectively, productively, and enjoy it more too. Empathy is available for pre-order now at any of your favorite retailers.
