While science fiction’s predictions of flying vehicles may not have materialised yet, innovations in the field of transport have changed how we get from A to B. The range of mobility modes on offer in our cities today would seem futuristic to people from a few decades ago, such as driverless metro trains, semi-autonomous vehicles and app-activated electric scooters. In addition to cutting journey times, innovation can help to reduce emissions by offering cleaner ways to transport goods and people.

At its meeting on 29 January, the Federal Council approved Switzerland's new reduction target under the Paris Agreement. This corresponds to the reduction path of the Swiss Climate and Innovation Act. By 2035, Switzerland should reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65 per cent compared to 1990 levels, and by 59 per cent on average between 2031 and 2035. The objectives are to be achieved primarily through domestic measures. At the same time, the Federal Council approved an amendment to the long-term climate strategy.

Around two-thirds of homeowners in Germany plan to have a solar power system installed by 2029, according to a survey commissioned by Munich-based climate NGO Initiative Klimaneutrales Deutschland. The survey showed a general uptick in the number of homeowners planning a clean technology purchase, with solar driving the interest, while political preferences didn't play a significant role in whether individuals were likely to invest in such technologies, said the NGO.

Most of the world's superpowers are members of the legally binding international treaty. President Trump wasted no time announcing a raft of executive orders after entering the Oval Office, and withdrawing from the Paris Agreement is one of them. He pulled the US out of the global climate agreement during his first term in office, so it is no big surprise that he has done the same again.

At the end of last week, it was announced that Spain will ban certain short-haul domestic flights as part of its 2050 climate action plan. The benchmark to decide which flights will be cancelled will depend mainly on whether there is a high-speed train route that can connect the same two points in less than two and a half hours.

How we keep warm at home accounts for 17% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. The UK cannot reach net zero emissions, and end its contribution to climate change, without ending its reliance on natural gas as the dominant source of heating. As elsewhere in Europe, heat pumps (which use electricity to draw heat out of the air or ground and circulate it indoors) are regarded as the best way to reduce carbon emissions. But are people ready to ditch their gas boilers?

The release of the 10th edition of the Global Energy and Climate Outlook (GECO) is a good occasion to reflect on the history of the GECO, and its importance for ambitious EU and global climate action. The 2015 Paris Agreement compels nearly 200 countries to prepare, update and implement ambitious national climate mitigation commitments. This includes the publication and implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), in line with long-term low greenhouse gas emission development strategies (LT-LEDS). NDCs and strategies must be consistent with the Paris Agreement mitigation goal of holding global average temperature increase to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the increase to 1.5°C. That is how the global community can jointly realise the Paris Agreement’s goals and keep our planet liveable.

Ending the sale of new carbon dioxide-emitting cars is politically unpopular, but one green group says it’s needed for the EU’s climate goals. The European Union’s green agenda is increasingly under fire, which is prompting backers of the idea of ending the sale of fossil fuel cars by 2035 to unleash campaigns aimed at ensuring no backsliding after June’s European election.
