Ten years after the landmark Paris Climate Agreement was decided, the social dimension of climate policy must play a greater role in government plans to curb emissions, Germany’s environment and climate minister, Carsten Schneider, has said. “Climate change has become a divisive issue around the world,” he warned, arguing that populist parties in many countries were eager to exploit the topic and to sow discord and obstruct effective policymaking.

The Danish government intends to use its EU Council presidency in the second half of this year to prioritise reaching an agreement among member states on a 2040 climate target for the European Union, said climate and energy minister Lars Aagaard at the annual summit of the energy industry association Eurelectric in Brussels. Also speaking at the conference, the European Commission’s top energy official Ditte Juul Jørgensen announced that her institution would very soon present legislative proposals aimed at ending imports of gas and nuclear energy from Russia – another priority for the Danish Council presidency. The official said that the EU would still need fossil molecules for the coming decades.

The European Commission will tell countries to cut 90 percent of their planet-warming emissions by 2040, but offer “flexibilities” to make the goal politically palatable, EU climate chief Teresa Ribera told POLITICO. Yet she warned that giving too many concessions risks excessively weakening the target — which the EU executive is hoping to present on June 4 or the week after, according to two officials.

For the first time, 38 citizens from across the Republic of Moldova – randomly selected, representing diverse regions, socio-economic backgrounds, languages, genders, and ages – recently took part in a Citizens’ Assembly to jointly develop recommendations on preventing the risks of disinformation to democracy and on strengthening the rule of law. The shared proposals adopted by the Assembly reflect a broad consensus on the need for concrete action against disinformation and highlight the importance of the solutions identified by participants to protect Moldova’s democracy.

THERE was serious fun and games at the University of Limerick Citizens’ Assembly, which saw over 100 Limerick people discuss research projects aimed at developing a more sustainable future for the region, each involving recreation. Having listened to nine project presentations, Limerick citizens voted for the top three, which each received €10,000 to make their idea happen.

When Vienna began requiring all new buildings and building extensions add solar panels two years ago, Abrahamczik says they also felt it was important to add panels to city hall. The panels aren't visible from the ground, so the city can maintain the building's 19th century look, while cutting climate pollution.
