Two well-known digital badging companies are merging. Credly recently announced that it had acquired Pearson's Acclaim badging business, to establish a "comprehensive solution suite for skill recognition, credential verification and talent management." In return, Pearson will gain a minority equity stake in Credly and a Pearson vice president will join the company's board of directors.

"Employers in the manufacturing industry use credentials inconsistently, generally not relying on them as a major factor in hiring or promotion decisions, according to the results of a survey conducted by Workcred, an affiliate of the American National Standards Institute, and the Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership, an operating unit of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The survey's 945 respondents from across the industry identified several primary reasons for their inconsistent use of credentials, including a lack of awareness, a preference for on-the-job training and a recognition that experience is a more valuable predictor of performance."

"If a student masters a subject such as English or Chemistry, then professors give them letter-grades for their transcripts indicating their level of mastery. But students learn much more than that at college, and some higher ed leaders are looking for ways to measure the other, softer skills student pick up while on campus. But efforts to issue “badges,” or lightweight credentials for things like leadership and resilience, come with plenty of challenges, including convincing employers to take them seriously."

"The American Council on Education and Credly have announced the intention to create a digital "working transcript." Funded by a $1.5 million grant from the Lumina Foundation, the initiative will build a process for recording the outcomes of training programs as discrete competencies, which will be usable as portable, digital, verified credentials."
