To avoid the possibility of a web site visitor viewing out-of-date content, most web developers use a meta tag or HTTP headers to tell the browser never to use a cached version of the page. However, this negates the web browser’s natural ability to cache web pages, and entails some serious disadvantages. For example, the content delivered by a dynamic page may only change once a day, so there’s certainly a benefit to be gained by having the browser cache a page–even if only for 24 hours.
If you’re working with a small PHP application, it’s usually possible to live with both issues. But as your site increases in complexity–and attracts more traffic–you’ll begin to run into performance problems. Both these issues can be solved, however: the first with server-side caching; the second, by taking control of client-side caching from within your application. The exact approach you use to solve these problems will depend on your application, but in this chapter, we’ll consider both PHP and a number of class libraries from PEAR as possible panaceas for your web page woes.
I read a lot of PHP code and from time to time I see people with a non-PHP background (or otherwise influenced) putting references everywhere they pass arrays or such in order to prevent copies. I knew this was a bad practice in PHP 5 and wanted to verify this in PHP 7.
I'm known for telling "Don't use references" (also as video) as those cause different problems (i.e. with foreach) and hurt performance. The reason for the performance loss is that references disable copy-on-write while most places in PHP assume copy-on-write. Meanwhile we have PHP 7. In PHP 7 the internal variable handling changed a lot among other things the reference counting moved from the zval, the container representing a variable, to the actual element. So I decided to run a little test to verify my performance assumption was still valid.

In this third post of the PHP's Source Code for PHP Developers series, we're going to expand on the prior posts to help understand how PHP works internally. In the first post of the series, we looked at how to view PHP's source code, how it's structured as well as some basic C pointers for PHP developers. The second post introduced functions into the mix. This time around, we're going to dive into one of the most useful structures in PHP: variables.
Jdrop provides a place to store JSON data in the cloud. The initial application is for storing performance data gathered from mobile devices. It's hard to analyze large amounts of information (HTTP waterfall charts, HTTP headers, document source, etc.) on a mobile device. Jdrop lets you gather this data on the mobile device but analyze it remotely on a larger screen.

Once you complete this brief report, you’ll come to understand what a static site is (and isn’t), as well as how to evaluate whether a static site generator is a workable solution for your project.
If there is one PHP related thing that I really hate, then it is definitely the Single Quotes Performance Myth. Let’s do a random Google search for “PHP single quotes performance”: You will get many results telling you that single quotes are faster than double quotes and that string interpolation is much slower than string concatenation. Most of them advise to use single quotes and concatenation to improve the performance of your application.
