My first three chapters in Even Faster Web Sites (Splitting the Initial Payload, Loading Scripts Without Blocking, and Coupling Asynchronous Scripts), focus on external scripts. But inline scripts block downloads and rendering just like external scripts do.
Ads, widgets, and analytics are a major cause for slow web sites. P3PC is a project focused on analyzing the performance of 3rd party content. The goal is to find the key wins to evangelize to make 3rd party content faster.
Generate Page Speed scores from a HAR (HTTP Archive format) file.
HAR is the file suffix for files generated using the HTTP Archive format. It's a file specification for capturing the HTTP experience of downloading a web page: HTTP headers, file sizes, download times, etc. HAR is fairly new, but it's already supported by Firebug and HttpWatch.
Create your own HAR files using Firebug and NetExport.
Loadtimer is intended to be used to measure page load times on mobile devices. Here's how to use it:
Edit the list of URLs - one per line.Check "record load times" to send the load time to the specified "beacon URL". The beacon URL defaults to Loadtimer's server where the data is aggregated in the results page. Change the beacon URL to send the beacons to your own server if desired.Clear your cache.Click "Start" to load the URLs one-by-one into the iframe. The iframe load time is displayed.
Web Episodes is a framework for timing web pages. It has three key concepts:
it supports measuring Web 2.0 applicationsmeasurements are made using JavaScript events so there can be multiple listenersits designed to be an industry standard for web developers, web metrics service providers, tool developers, and browser developers
Cuzillion is a tool for quickly constructing web pages to see how components interact. Browsers have unexpected behavior in everyday situations (for example, inline scripts block all rendering in the page and nothing can download in parallel with an external script). Sometimes the behavior differs across browsers (Internet Explorer 8 downloads six items in parallel whereas Firefox 2.0 only downloads two in parallel). Cuzillion lets you observe these behaviors and share sample pages with others.
Background images make pages look good, but also make them slower. Each background image is an extra HTTP request. There's a fix: combine background images into a CSS sprite. But creating sprites is hard, requiring arcane knowledge and lots of trial and error. SpriteMe removes the hassles with the click of a button.
