Decades of corruption have left African nations prey to Ebola

Decades of corruption have left African nations prey to Ebola | Ebola Outbreak 2014 | Scoop.it

The word Ebola is conjuring up fear around the world; breakdowns in Western infection control procedures have led to cases in Spain and the US, and have given the non-African world a taste—or a foretaste—of a disease already ravaging core areas of three African countries.

Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea are neighbors, and are all marked by political instability and corruption. Terrible and protracted civil wars devastated Sierra Leone and Liberia, while Guinea’s recent history has been one of division, military rule, and an effort at civilian government that has marginalized opposition and caused continuing tension and urban bloodshed.

Ebola communication: What we've learned so far | Devex | Ebola Outbreak 2014 | Scoop.it

For organizations involved in communication and awareness raising campaigns, meanwhile, this situation means they need to be more aggressive and robust, and their messaging fool-proof...

....But are these campaigns actually working? Will the new plans be effective? It’s hard to tell at this point. Monitoring and evaluation activities, given the severity of the crisis, are rare, and most organizations lack the bandwidth to incorporate M&E in their daily workflow in West Africa.

Despite the chaos, there are a few lessons learned, which officials from different groups involved in social mobilization efforts to stem the spread of Ebola shared with Devex....

SIERRA LEONE | Higher Coping in the Ebola-Affected Districts | WFP

  • People living in the districts of Kailahun and Kenema are using severe food coping strategies more frequently, compared to people in other areas of the country. These are the areas where most EVD cases have been reported since the start of the outbreak. According to the 2010 Comprehensive Food Security and Vulnerability Analysis, households in Kailahun and Kenema were less likely to be food insecure than in other parts of Sierra Leone.

  • Low casual wage prices in the east appear to be driving down people’s food purchasing power. This may be one reason why food coping levels are higher in that part of the country.

  • As the main annual harvest starts, staple food prices in the east are not showing serious anomalies compared to other regions of the country. Price trends will continue to be monitored in subsequent months.
