“ The American aid agency announced Thursday it would donate $75 million to fund 1,000 more beds in Ebola treatment centers in Liberia and buy 130,000 more protective suits for health care workers.”
A missionary group says another American doctor has contracted the Ebola virus while working at a hospital in Liberia.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Serving In Mission said the unnamed doctor had been treating women in the obstetrics ward of a hospital in the Liberian capital.
...We find that, although surveillance and containment measures have been in place for several months, the transmissibility in hospital and funeral rites are likely an appreciable component of the overall transmissibility. The probability of case exportation is extremely modest (upper bound less than 5%) for non-African countries, with the exception of the United Kingdom (UK), Belgium, France and the United States (US).
As of the beginning of September, the countries with the largest probability of seeing the arrival of EVD cases are Ghana, UK and Gambia. The overall probability of international spread will increase if the Nigerian outbreak is not promptly controlled. We also show that as of the end of September, the size distribution of outbreaks due to the international spread of the EVD is contained (median value <4 cases) for countries outside of the African region. Severe travel restrictions to and from the affected areas (80% airline traffic reduction) generates only a 3-4 weeks delay in the international spreading....
The United Nations said $600 million in supplies would be needed to fight West Africa's Ebola outbreak, as the death toll from the worst ever epidemic of the virus topped 1,900 and Guinea warned it had penetrated a new part of the country.
The West African Ebola virus outbreak is rippling through the continent's import markets, and Thailand, one of the world's largest rice exporters, is feeling the pinch. The Thai rice industry has already been hurt by policies of the former government, deposed earlier this year by the military, and the Ebola epidemic is further stressing it.
According to the Bangkok News, Thailand was already on track to set new records for exports to Africa, and while it will ship more this year than last, it's still unlikely to be able to meet demand. That's bad for the African nations who need the staple food product, as well as for the Thai economy and general political environment.
The report said that shippers are unable to find crews willing to make the journey to African ports due to fears of contracting the virus.
Food in countries hit by Ebola is getting more expensive and will become scarcer because many farmers won’t be able to go to their fields, a U.N. food agency [FAO] warned Tuesday.
The number of people infected with Ebola in West Africa will likely increase significantly over the next few weeks, according to the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who just returned from the region. "As bad as the situation is now, everything I've seen suggests that over the next few weeks, it's likely to get worse," Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the CDC, said today (Sept. 2) in a news conference. Although health officials know how to stop the spread of Ebola, the current response needs to be scaled up in order to end the outbreak, Frieden said. "The challenge is that the number of cases is so large, the outbreak is so overwhelming, what it requires now is an overwhelming response," Frieden said.
At a press conference Tuesday, CDC Director Tom Frieden warned that time is running out to contain West Africa’s Ebola outbreak.
Days after returning from West Africa, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Thomas Frieden opened a press conference with a sobering admonition about the effort to contain the Ebola epidemic to West Africa: “The window is closing.”
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) International President Dr. Joanne Liu briefed Member States at the United Nations headquarters in New York on the Ebola Outbreak in West Africa on September 2, 2014.
A top US Health official has an ominous warning for Kenya. The deadly Ebola virus is on the way. Dr Tom Kenyon, the director of the Global Health Centre at the US Centers for Disease Control is urging every African country that has not had a case of Ebola, to prepare for the first case. Irene Choge reports on the Ebola threat.
“Results from the virus characterization, together with findings from the epidemiological investigation, are definitive: the outbreak in DRC is a distinct and independent event, with no relationship to the outbreak in west Africa.”
An outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed 31 people and the epidemic remains contained in a remote northwestern region, UN the World Health Organization (WHO) said Tuesday.
“There are now 31 deaths,” Eugene Kambambi, the WHO’s head of communication in DR Congo, told AFP, citing Congolese authorities and stressing that the epidemic “remains contained” in an area around 800 kilometres (500 miles) north of the capital Kinshasa.
BBC – The Ebola outbreak is putting food harvests in West Africa“ at serious risk”, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warns. It has raised a special alert for Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, the three countries worst affected.

Kenya opened a third Ebola screening centre on its border with Uganda on Tuesday, a local official said, days before it hosts a regional summit on the spread of the virus, amid citizens’ fears that measures to keep the disease out of the country have been inadequate.
...Using the the cumulative total numbers of clinical cases (confirmed, probable and suspected) reported by WHO, the analytic capacity for forecasting from Tableau Software was applied to predict the total number of EVD cases during the next 12 weeks (from September 7th to November 23rd, 2014).
The interactive data visualization bellow shows the actual trend lines of cumulative cases of EVD from March 16 to August 26, 2014 and the estimated number of cases with 95% confidence interval [CI] from September 7 to November 23, 2014 (12 weeks). Hovering the mouse over the actual and projected (estimate) trend lines will provide details of number of cases per weeks....
Main findings
Based on the forecasting model and asuming the current conditions (diagnosis, treatment, interventions and reporting) of the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa remains as in the past, it is expected a rapid and exponential increase in the number of cases and deaths.
It is estimated that the cumulative number of cases will reach more than 8,000 95% CI (6,466-9,954) for the three countries Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone in the next 12 weeks.
Liberia is strongly contributing to the high number of cases of the whole outbreak in the last weeks. It is estimated that Liberia reachs more than 4,000 cases in the next 12 week, practically half of the total number of cases estimates for the whole outbreak (three countries together). Liberia and Sierra Leone have the highest average rate of cases per week.
An aide to Sierra Leone's President has said the president was "seriously" contemplating a nationwide shutdown to contain spread of Ebola. For weeks now there has been speculation about a planned 21-day nationwide quarantine to prevent sick people from moving around, a situation that has seen the virus spread uncontrollably.
Peter Piot has revealed that new tests of ZMapp have led to the recovery of 18 monkeys infected with the virus. Piot, who is now Director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine... has long called for compassionate use of experimental drugs. ZMapp was successfully used on two American doctors... and on a Spanish priest who later died. Here now is the full version of Professor Piot's interview by our Special Contributor, James Chau.
Military teams should be sent to west Africa immediately if there is to be any hope of controlling the Ebola epidemic, doctors on the frontline told the United Nations on Tuesday, painting a stark picture of health workers dying, patients left without care and infectious bodies lying in the streets.
As the death toll from the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa continues to rise, experts are also concerned about the long-term effects the disease will have on the already fragile markets and economies of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, which have suffered the most damage.
“We are at a dangerous moment,” wrote World Bank President Jim Yong Kim and Harvard University Professor Paul Farmer, in a weekend editorial in the Washington Post. “Tens of thousands of lives, the future of the region and hard-won economic and health gains for millions hang in the balance.”
The United Nations World Food Program and Food and Agriculture Organization announced on Tuesday that it had approved 65,000 metric tons of food assistance to the nearly 1.3 million people affected by the outbreak in the past three months.
“Set against the backdrop of already high levels of poverty and limited social service capacities, the impact of the [Ebola] outbreak is having acute repercussions on the food security of affected populations,” the report says, citing reduced food trade, rising prices and lower domestic harvests.
At the gravesite in a northern Liberia village, there are no religious or traditional burial rites. No ceremony, no mourning, no family members, and no final goodbyes.
Nothing but a group of men dressed in space-suit-like outfits, cautiously throwing the dead body into the grave, they pause only to toss in anything else they are wearing that came into contact with the deceased...
