DRC | Fish farmers hit by Ebola crisis | Ebola Outbreak 2014 | Scoop.it

Fish farmers in Turkana are incurring massive losses after they lost their biggest market.

The Democratic Republic of Congo provided the main external market for fish from Lake Turkana but outbreak of Ebola has seen this market closed down as authorities in the central African republic seek to control the spread of the disease.

So far, Ebola has claimed 31 people in northwestern region of DRC, some 800 kilometres from the capital Kinshasa.
This is the seventh Ebola outbreak in DRC since 1976, according to the government.

LIBERIA | WHO says non-conventional interventions needed

During the past weeks, a WHO team of emergency experts worked together with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and members of her government to assess the Ebola situation in Liberia....

The investigation in Liberia yields 3 important conclusions that need to shape the Ebola response in high-transmission countries.

FIRST, conventional Ebola control interventions are not having an adequate impact in Liberia, though they appear to be working elsewhere in areas of limited transmission, most notably in Nigeria, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

SECOND, far greater community engagement is the cornerstone of a more effective response. Where communities take charge, especially in rural areas, and put in place their own solutions and protective measures, Ebola transmission has slowed considerably.

THIRD, key development partners who are supporting the response in Liberia and elsewhere need to prepare to scale up their current efforts by three- to four-fold.

Vaccinated monkeys show "long-term" immunity to Ebola, raising prospect of successful human trials

Vaccinated monkeys show "long-term" immunity to Ebola, raising prospect of successful human trials | Ebola Outbreak 2014 | Scoop.it

The experiments by the US National Institutes of Health showed immunity could last at least 10 months. Human trials of the vaccine started this week in the US and will extend to the UK and Africa....

...These will take place in the US, the University of Oxford in the UK as well as in Mali and Gambia. People will be given just the initial jab, not a follow-up booster, in the trials.

The WHO said safety data would be ready by November 2014 and, if the vaccine proved safe, it would be used in West Africa immediately.

Healthcare workers and other frontline staff would be prioritised for vaccination.

The number of doses currently available is between 400 - if a lot of vaccine is needed for immunity - and 4,000 if smaller amounts are sufficient. As with all experimental therapies, the WHO has warned hopes of a vaccine must not detract from the proven methods of infection control which have defeated all previous outbreaks...
