Some in Sierra Leone ran away from their homes Saturday and others clashed with health workers trying to bury dead Ebola victims as the country struggled through the second day of an unprecedented lockdown to combat the deadly disease.
Despite these setbacks, officials said most of Sierra Leone's 6 million people were complying with orders to stay at home as nearly 30,000 volunteers and health care workers fanned out across the country to distribute soap and information on how to prevent Ebola.

The bank said the assistance will go towards helping families and communities cope with the economic impact of the crisis, and rebuild and strengthen essential public health systems in the three worst-affected countries to guard against future disease outbreaks. The new project will also improve access to food and other basic supplies for Ebola-affected households in the quarantined areas and other “hot zones” in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

Nigerian Christians are fearful that practicing one of their religion’s most sacred rites might lead to death by Ebola.
In response to the spread of the deadly virus, prominent Nigerian churches have asked parishioners to stop taking the Communion elements in the mouth and refrain from shaking hands as a ceremonial sign of peace.
Nigeria’s Catholic and Anglican churches issued statements in August asking priests to deliver communion elements into parishioner’s cupped palms, instead of placing the wafers on the tongue. The churches also approved the practice of “intinction,” or dipping the communion wafer into the cup of wine before placing it in the mouth.

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa could have a “catastrophic” economic effect on the region unless there is a swift response, the World Bank said Wednesday.
An analysis by the bank says the Ebola crisis is already wreaking havoc on the economies of the hardest-hit countries, making the nations of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone $359 million poorer in 2014 than they would have been without the disease’s spread.

UNICEF said today it needs over $200 million to respond to the Ebola outbreak that has claimed over 2,400 lives and ravaged communities across West Africa. This is part of a broader, six-month appeal for $987.8 million that governments and humanitarian agencies require to fight the disease....
...Of the $200 million, nearly $65 million will go to UNICEF’s programmes in Liberia, around $61 million to Sierra Leone and more than $55 million to Guinea. An additional $10 million will help neighbouring countries be prepared for a potential spread of the disease within their borders. The remaining $9 million are required for regional coordination efforts.

What's inside one of these kits?
"It's a bucket that contains a sprayer, which is used for disinfectants; rolls of bags for capturing infected garments or items," says USAID's Nancy Lindborg. There are also gloves, gowns, masks, soap and some chlorine, she says.
Kits like these have been distributed in previous Ebola outbreaks, but never on this scale. The big question is: Can these kits help slow the spread of the virus?...

Residents across Sierra Leone, one of three countries at the centre of the biggest ever Ebola outbreak, scrambled on Wednesday to prepare for a three-day, unprecedented nationwide "lockdown" in a radical step intended to curb the spread of the killer virus, but which some health experts believe could worsen the epidemic.
Citizens will not be allowed to leave their homes from Thursday until Sunday. Known as "ose to ose" in the widely-used local Krio, health workers will also go house-to-house identifying cases and raising awareness.
