Bilingualism: why boosting the rights of minority language speakers could help save Gaelic in Scotland

Bilingualism: why boosting the rights of minority language speakers could help save Gaelic in Scotland | Language Education Outside the U.S. | Scoop.it
Gaelic speakers need opportunities to use their language in a wide variety of social and everyday settings to avoid its presence being eroded.
Jefferson Vallejo Villa's curator insight, September 23, 2020 1:58 PM
After reading this article and watch the video attached to it, I noticed the importance of the use of a language. According to the text, many people think that someone is bilingual when they manage the same fluency of both languages, but other expressed that it depends of the frequency of the use of those languages people know. For example in Scotland, Gaelic is being apart from the people's customs once that the use of English has increased a lot and people communicate the most in English language. Hence, that is the reason why Gaelic is tending to dissapear since people are not using it anymore. Trust this will not happen because language is our main identity as members of a society.

Jefferson Vallejo Villa's curator insight, September 23, 2020 8:06 PM
This article underlights Montreal as one of the most advanced cities in the world in terms of bilingual population. Since Montreal does not have an official language, it make population free to decide what language use because everything is expressed in English and French languages. Before that, there was a law which stated French as the official language of the city with the aim of everything were written, read, and spoken in French, but this law was abolished causing that people were free to decide what language use giving to the city a wide field of bilingualism. It shows a city which is so far away in terms of development and education. Wish sometime the whole country apply this method of non-official language motivating other contries to do it.

Learning a foreign language is like learning to play an instrument. It takes time, practice and effort. But what if you get the hang of it, but have no one to “perform” to? That’s the story of millions of Soviet students, who studied English while knowing that they would never have any real chance of going to any of the countries where people actually spoke English. Luckily, they couldn’t have been more wrong.

Jefferson Vallejo Villa's curator insight, September 23, 2020 7:14 PM
This article brings good news to English people who want to increase their rank of language education. This is due to the fact that the Portuguese embassy in the United Kingdom decided to open an elementary school in an English city where they are going to teach students about the things that we regularly learn at school but this time they will include a plus which is the teaching of Portuguese language. This is going to expand the bilingual population of the country by adding the teaching of a new language.
