A comprehensive study warns that 1,500 endangered languages could no longer be spoken by the end of this century. Published in Nature Ecology and Evolution (www.nature.com/articles/s41559-021-01604-y), the study, led by the Australian National University (ANU), charts the widest range of factors ever putting endangered languages under pressure and identified predictors that put endangered languages at high risk. Co-author Professor Lindell Bromham said that of the world’s 7,000 recognized languages, around half are currently endangered: “We found that without immediate intervention, language loss could triple in the next 40 years. In today's global society, bilingualism is increasingly common. Many grow up with one language at home and another at school. In a new dissertation at Umeå University, Baran Johansson has investigated how children in grades 4–9 read and write in two languages with different alphabets. The participants are Persian-Swedish bilingual students with and without reading difficulties who can read and write in both Persian (Arabic alphabet) and Swedish (Latin alphabet).

But, say experts, that’s a big mistake.  ‘Monolingualism is not the norm,’ says Dr Sharon Unsworth, a language scientist at Radboud University and the host of Kletsheads, a podcast about raising bilingual children. While in the Netherlands around 25% of the population speak an additional language beyond Dutch at home, globally it’s at least 60%
