Business intelligence programs are at a tipping point. How can IT leaders balance the need to support self-service analytics while ensuring data integrity? The proliferation of data, and the shift toward data-driven businesses, has had such a profound impact that every business is an analytics business.
Industrial environments such as those found within large electric and gas utilities are producing massive volumes of data in real-time that is overwhelming traditional ICT architectures. Additionally, the variety of operational data generated in industrial environments is orders of magnitude more complex than what is typically found in ICT environments.

If you’re an aspiring data scientist, you’re inquisitive – always exploring, learning, and asking questions. Online tutorials and videos can help you prepare you for your first role, but the best way to ensure that you’re ready to be a data scientist is by making sure you’re fluent in the tools people use in the industry. Co-director of the Web Science Institute, Susan Halford, responds to Mark Carrigan‘slatest round of questions for our series on the philosophy of data science. In this feature she underlines the necessity of broad interdisciplinarity as well as further technical training to engage in depth with the web as it evolves in different ways.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has rapidly arrived around us, but the data it generates is outpacing our ability to consume and analyze it. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a topic that is continuing to rise in buzz and interest. The IoT has been rapidly arriving around us whether we realize it or not. However, the sensor technology behind the IoT and the data it generates is outpacing our ability to consume, analyze, and drive value with it. This must change, and it certainly will in light of the focus that organizations are putting on analyzing IoT data. Bill Franks, 08/10/2015

MIT researchers have designed a big-data analysis system which aims to replace human intuition in the search for buried patterns. To examine the first prototype of their system, they registered it in three data science competitions, where they contested against human teams to detect predictive patterns in unaccustomed arrays of data.
