Pete Warden is spot on about being sceptical of data, but it is data visualisation, not data science, where caution is most crucial

Big Data: New Opportunities and New Challenges

We can live with many of the uncertainties of big data for now, with the hope that its benefits will outweigh its harms, but we shouldn't blind ourselves to the possible irreversibility of changes—whether good or bad—to society.

Pierre Tran's insight:

INTERVIEW Bernard Ourghanlian, directeur
Pierre Tran's insight:

CIOs, big data and the Internet of Things

CIOs, big data and the Internet of Things | Digital Data | Scoop.it

A Gartner report by Hung LeHong published earlier this year stated that much of the value of the Internet of Things (IoT) will come from the data it will generate. This, the report said, will make big data analysis a cornerstone of the success of the IoT, and a clear reason for CIOs to be involved.

Brainstorm spoke to three CIOs about what level of strategic thought they’ve given to the IoT, and how they’ll deal with the volumes of data it will doubtless generate.

But, panic in the streets and chaos often drowns out reasonable advice. Gartner believes big data is headed for the Trough of Disillusionment.

A Three-Step Process For Analyzing Qualitative Data

A Three-Step Process For Analyzing Qualitative Data | Digital Data | Scoop.it

A question I often get when discussing online qualitative exercises is: what does the output look like? It’s true that qualitative data doesn’t come as easily packaged in a nice graph or chart as quantitative data does. In fact, how you analyze and captivatingly display qualitative results is a process that requires not only an analytical and logical mind but also a creative touch.

Pierre Tran's insight:

Next Phase of the Data Economy: W3C's Semantic Web and LinkedData

Next Phase of the Data Economy: W3C's Semantic Web and LinkedData | Digital Data | Scoop.it

In continuing the search for open data one cannot possibly overlook the W3C (the World Wide Web Consortium).  In my opinion the W3C has had more impact on our information technology lives over the past 18+ years than any other open standards or open source entity.

[...] Specific to open data, W3C continues to play a central, albeit heretofore relatively quiet, role; that quietude will soon change.  Despite the hype around Apache Hadoop and related open source “big data” projects, if one considers the term “big data” from a wider context, all the way out to what I like to call the Data Economy, then W3C plays a more strategic role than Hadoop and its many cousins.  Let’s explore further.

Pierre Tran's insight:

The Future is Data

The Future is Data | Digital Data | Scoop.it

At a time when journalism is undergoing a profound crisis as a result of the rise of social networks, financing difficulties, and increasing layoffs in the media industry, the 1st Data Journalism Conference organised by the Spanish chapter of the Open Knowledge Foundation opened up a new direction for the profession; a future that paradoxically goes back to its origins: to the search for new sources, to objective accounts of events and to data analysis.

Fàtima Galan's curator insight, July 16, 2013 4:31 AM

Great summary about the speakers talk given on the 1st Data Journalism Conference by Mar Cabra, Eva Belmonte, John Burn-Murdoch and Manuel Aristarán.
Through the data analysis today we can speak about Data Journalism, Smart Cities, Open Government. The use and exploitation of any data source, proprietary or external (Open Data or not), shows a change that allows processes for understand what happens and the development of others oriented to the business. The companies are the main interested on the acquisition and exploitation of this data to gain competitive advantage. But they aren’t the only ones able to use this data. Users can also maximize the creation and use of information for the creation and development of politics that allows a better management of our resources and benefits for the citizens.

Bringing simplicity to large data analytics with Google BigQuery

Bringing simplicity to large data analytics with Google BigQuery | Digital Data | Scoop.it

Simple data analytics can sometimes seem like a misnomer. Technology that’s simple for engineers and IT may add complexity to business processes. And the inverse can be true for implementing agile analytics into traditional Business Intelligence (BI) systems. We often hear from customers in industries--ranging from retail to hospitality--that highly skilled teams struggle to deliver what the organization really needs: actionable and data-driven business insights.
