How to Motivate Users to Complete a Difficult Task | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
UX design tricks from behaviour design and gamification to motivate users to complete difficult tasks: a Step-by-Step guide using Airbnb as a Case Study written by Lorena Vargas.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

So if you have a task in your interface that your users refuse to finish, or where you usually lose those users for good – especially if it is a long and boring form- applying these steps can be very beneficial for your application.

As you can see on this Airbnb case, I have chosen a very specific solution for the problem, but you may find that just some of my recommendations are suitable for your own product.

Generative vs. Evaluative Research: What’s the Difference and Why Do We Need Each?

Generative vs. Evaluative Research: What’s the Difference and Why Do We Need Each? | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
The goals of generative and evaluative research are very different. Generative research helps you define the problem you’d like to design a solution for. Evaluative research evaluates an existing design (in prototype form or in final form). In the post below, we tease apart the detailed differences between these two research techniques, why they’re valuable, [...]
Mickael Ruau's insight:

What is generative research?

The goal of generative research is to look to the world around you to find opportunities for solutions and innovation. These solutions could be new products or experiences or they could be an update or improvement to an existing one.

In order to identify new and innovative solutions, you must define the problem you are trying to solve. This requires you to truly understand people’s live, environments, behaviors, attitudes/opinions, and perceptions. Indi Young, a user experience consultant and a founding partner at Adaptive Path, believes you must “feather your nest” with generative research. This includes rich data about your target audience and their needs/goals before defining the problem and crafting a solution.

When conducting generative research, the most important thing to do is to keep an open mind: you don’t actually know what problem you are trying to solve yet.

Why is it valuable?

Quite frankly, if you don’t conduct generative research, you could create something that no one actually needs or uses! Take a look at this list of failed products. Many failed because they were addressing a (sometimes fictitious) problem the creators didn’t truly understand.

You don’t develop the best solution by doing lots of evaluative research and refining your design. You develop the best solution by properly identifying the problem with generative research.

15 Key Product Management Metrics and KPIs

15 Key Product Management Metrics and KPIs | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it

Every software product you regularly use is data-driven. Example? Uber, Spotify, Amazon, Facebook, Netflix, the AltexSoft website you’re viewing right now – just to name a few. To deliver the most value, encourage your return and loyalty, executives of companies like to start their weeks by looking at metrics – pieces of quantifiable data that illustrate the changes in revenue and customer behavior.

Of course, knowing these changes exist won’t solve anything. Netflix’s ex VP/CPO Gibson Biddle, explained that they used data to hypothesize and then A/B test assumptions to find out what worked. That’s exactly how Netflix decided to replace their 5-star rating system with simple like and dislike buttons, introduce the “percentage match” of the movies, and majorly simplified the UI.

In this article, we will introduce you to metrics and KPIs to track your product success. While they will give you the knowledge, the real power lies in how you learn from them, how you interpret, hypothesize, and spark change.

Orchestrating experiments at scale

Ideas are never a problem. Each team working on a software project knows how easy is to fill the backlog with 100 new things to build. The most challenging part comes when it’s necessary to make decisions about what to include or exclude. How can we connect the work to high-level business results, and at the same time, leave the space for exploring uncertainty? This talk describes an outcome-first approach to strategy and prioritization. With examples coming from the real-life experience, it shows how it’s possible to balance team autonomy and a global product direction. How a value-based prioritization creates an adaptive, learning culture, enabling cross-functional and collaborative decision making.

Hone Your Customer Interviewing Technique

Hone Your Customer Interviewing Technique | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
What makes an interview biased or misleading?
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Give Participants Cliff Notes

I used to start my usability testing sessions with a lengthy, verbal introduction. It covered several topics: permission to record, the purpose of the session, how to think aloud, what to do if questions come up, etc. In fact, after my first few sessions I came to realize that it was way too much information for participants to digest. They would forget to think out loud or even forget why we were doing the session to begin with.

Now, I give participants cliff notes to reference during my intro and throughout the test. These three simple bullet points hit the most important points I need participants to remember:

  1. You can’t do anything wrong.
  2. Think out loud.
  3. Give us honest feedback.
  4. I may not be able to answer questions right away.

If you’re looking for a long form script to read or tweak, you can download our usability testing script.

Be in a Band, not an Orchestra: how to Grow an Agile Product Team

Be in a Band, not an Orchestra: how to Grow an Agile Product Team | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
Some years ago, I wrote a blog post noting that small teams are more creative and productive than big teams. I suggested that this might be because, like a band, they were self organising, communicated easily and informally and had autonomy over what they played. Band vs Orchestra I contrasted this to an orchestra, which [...]Rea
Mickael Ruau's insight:

The Manifesto

One of the most important sections of the delivery plan was a manifesto of sorts which set out how the team would work. Every good band should have a manifesto. It was the foundation stone that we would continue to build upon. It gave the team autonomy over delivering the vision, what the product would do and how we would build it.

The principles of our approach included:

  • A single, small, stable, highly collaborative, multi-disciplined delivery team in a single location
  • A single product owner with decision-making authority
  • A development team empowered to deliver the product vision based on agreed objectives

Many of these will probably be familiar to you from the agile manifesto but it required some convincing of a large traditional organisation like the OU.
