Mickael Ruau's insight:

Continuous Integration (CI) is a common improvement practice ordinarily applied in the DevOps procedure stream. Engineers consistently blend their code changes into a shared repository where those updates are naturally tried.

Continuous integration guarantees the most exceptional and approved code is in every case promptly accessible to engineers. CI prevents expensive postponements being developed by enabling various designers to chip away at a similar source code with certainty, as opposed to holding back to coordinate separate areas of code at the same time on release day.

This practice is an essential part of the DevOps procedure stream, which plans to consolidate speed and nimbleness with unwavering quality and security.

Réexaminons ce qu'est DevOps

Réexaminons ce qu'est DevOps | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it

| Devops for Growth | Scoop.it

DevOps Workflow and Principles - javatpoint

DevOps Workflow and Principles - javatpoint | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it

DevOps workflow provides a visual overview of the sequence in which input is provided. Also, it tells about which one action is performed, and output is generated for an operations process.

Mickael Ruau's insight:

The main principles of DevOps are Continuous delivery, automation, and fast reaction to the feedback.

  1. End to End Responsibility: DevOps team need to provide performance support until they become the end of life. It enhances the responsibility and the quality of the products engineered.
  2. Continuous Improvement: DevOps culture focuses on continuous improvement to minimize waste. It continuously speeds up the growth of products or services offered.
  3. Automate Everything: Automation is an essential principle of the DevOps process. This is for software development and also for the entire infrastructure landscape.
  4. Custom Centric Action: DevOps team must take customer-centric for that they should continuously invest in products and services.
  5. Monitor and test everything: The DevOps team needs to have robust monitoring and testing procedures.
  6. Work as one team: In the DevOps culture role of the designers, developers, and testers are already defined. All they needed to do is work as one team with complete collaboration.

These principles are achieved through several DevOps practices, which include frequent deployments, QA automation, continuous delivery, validating ideas as early as possible, and in-team collaboration.

DevOps Practices

Some identified DevOps practices are:

  • Self-service configuration
  • Continuous build
  • Continuous integration
  • Continuous delivery
  • Incremental testing
  • Automated provisioning
  • Automated release management

Software Engineering at Google: Practices, Tools, Values, and Culture

Software Engineering at Google: Practices, Tools, Values, and Culture | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
The book Software Engineering at Google provides insights into the practices and tools used at Google to develop and maintain software with respect to time, scale, and the tradeoffs that all engineers make in development. It also explores the engineering values and the culture that’s based on them, emphasizing the main differences between programming and software engineering.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Key Takeaways

  • We wrote “Software Engineering at Google” for people at all levels of experience, from students to engineering policy makers. We’ve tried hard to not say “This is the one true way to do it,” because we recognize that our scale and resources are wholly different than other organizations.
  • Software engineering is not (just) programming, it’s programming over time. We’re focused mostly on how to keep things sustainable over time, and how to coordinate and collaborate with other people. There is very little code in the book, but it’s still very much about software.
  • Google is imperfect, both technically and organizationally. You can see that in our handling of technical issues like maintenance of external packages, and also in our cultural issues around equity and diversity.
  • Code review is not primarily about defect-detection, it’s more useful as a communication exercise. It provides a great opportunity for education, and establishing a shared understanding.
  • Choice is often the enemy of efficiency in technical domains. Our version control and dependency management policies work mostly by removing options from our engineers. If you don’t have a choice, you don’t have a problem.

The book Software Engineering at Google curated by Titus Winters, Tom Manshreck and Hyrum Wright provides insights into the practices and tools used at Google to develop and maintain software with respect to time, scale, and the tradeoffs that all engineers make in development. It also explores the engineering values and the culture that’s based on them, emphasizing the main differences between programming and software engineering.

InfoQ readers can download a sample of the book Book Software Engineering at Google.
