Facilitation Toolbox :: Designing Experiences

We believe that deliberate choices in platform and the ways you interact with technology matters in designing the experiences you want your participants to have. Scaffolding, creating a shared sense of purpose as well as choosing the right environment can all help to create learning experiences. To the right, you can find how we contextualize these important features of digital engagement.

Communication and working together

Communication and working together | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
One can easily envision someone working on all three levels on any given day:

a small team producing a deliverable on a deadline for a client (coordination);
members of that team providing advice and information to other teams on related projects (collaboration);
team members working with a larger and looser network in identifying new business opportunities (cooperation).

How to manage meetings like an expert facilitator

How to manage meetings like an expert facilitator | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
Meeting management can be tricky, especially if you're new to it. These 8 techniques from a seasoned meeting facilitator will help you nail it.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Create a “parking lot” for good ideas that distract

If an idea pops up that is valuable, but off-point, offer to create a “parking lot” and jot it down (usually on the whiteboard or in the meeting notes) so you can come back to it later. Because right now is all about nailing your objective for this meeting.

Knowing their thoughts aren’t lost forever to the aether helps people return their focus to the outcome you’re striving for.

How to Take Notes That Don't Suck - Note Taking Strategies | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
Most common reasons to be searching through old notes:

Figuring out who is supposed to do what
Revisiting/clarifying decisions made
Looking for greater context on requirements
Resolving disagreements/disputes (and to some extent, CYA)

So the key here is to use note taking strategies that suit your needs.

Creating Psychological Safety in Workshops +

Creating Psychological Safety in Workshops + | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
Reagan Pugh explains the importance of creating psychological safety in workshops and how to do so for optimal success.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Google made some powerful and important discoveries in their search for what makes the most effective teams in what was dubbed Project Aristotle. They now host a conversation called re:Work about the principles they discovered.

Chief amongst the most important principles for healthy and productive teams is a sense of Psychological Safety — which is best summarized by ensuring each member of the team feels safe to take risks, ask questions, challenge authority and admit mistakes.

From Google’s re:Work

They then identified three key behaviors practiced by the most Psychologically Safe, and thus, most effective teams. They are simply:

Equality in Conversational Turn-Taking

If each person speaks roughly the same amount, that team is more likely to succeed.

Ostentatious Listening

Show team members you’re listening by repeating what was just said, or closing your laptop to pay attention.

Average Social Sensitivity

The ability to intuit how others felt based on their tone of voice, their expressions and other nonverbal cues.
