Ebook CoopTic : LaStigmergie

Ebook CoopTic : LaStigmergie | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it

Backed by the Linux Foundation, Sigstore aims to provide a non-profit service to foster the adoption of cryptographic signing by open source projects to make the software supply chain more secure.

The main issue Sigstore attempts to tackle is the difficulty of knowing the origin of a piece of software, or how it was built. This becomes especially tricky when that software is included in a larger project, paving the way to external attacks. As Google security engineers Kim Lewandowski and Dan Lorenc put it introducing the initiative,

Installing most open source software today is equivalent to picking up a random thumb-drive off the sidewalk and plugging it into your machine.

Supply-chain attacks are a real thing, as multiple cases of malicious packages injected into popular packaging systems, such as RubyGems, NPM, and others, show. Possibly the most impactful recent supply-chain attack was the SolarWinds breach, that affected thousands of customers, including US government agencies.

Eric Brewer, Rob Pike and others at Google have recently stressed the importance of a multifaceted approach to vulnerabilities in open source based on three ideas: know, prevent, fix.

OpenStack Collaboration made in heaven with Heat, Mistral, Neutron an…

Cross-project collaboration is something OpenStack community has embraced for a long time. Common libraries like Oslo reduces the time and effort to build a new service. Another way this manifests is in new OpenStack services getting built using existing services to solve an higher level use-case.

In this talk we are present how the band of projects comprising of Mistral, Tacker, Neutron, Heat, TOSCA-parser and Barbican came together to build an industry leading ETSI NFV Orchestrator that leveraged the best of these projects. Each of these projects brought in critical functionalities needed towards the final product. You will learn how, when strung together, this solution follows the classic Microservices design pattern that the industry is rapidly adopting.

Introduction - InnerSource Patterns

Introduction - InnerSource Patterns | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
Mickael Ruau's insight:
What is InnerSource?

We define InnerSource as:

The use of open source principles and practices for software development within the confines of an organization.

InnerSource takes the lessons learned from developing open source software and applies them to the way companies develop software internally. As developers have become accustomed to working on world-class open source software, there is a strong desire to bring those practices back inside the firewall and apply them to software that companies may be reluctant to release.

For companies building mostly closed source software, InnerSource can be a great tool to help break down silos, encourage and scale internal collaboration, accelerate new engineer on-boarding, and identify opportunities to contribute software back to the open source world.

What are InnerSource Patterns?

Patterns are a way of describing a repeatable, proven solution to a problem within a context. Patterns follow a simple form that assists you during the implementation of a solution to understand the constraints of the problem, understand the forces you need to balance, and the resulting context - the situation created by applying the solution.

Patterns can provide a way for the InnerSource Commons participants to concisely share information, improving the practice of InnerSource. Patterns are divided into Title, Problem Statement, Context, Forces, and Solutions as their main sections.
