Containeriser PostgreSQL avec Docker ! – Capdata TECH BLOG | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it

The Twelve-Factor App

In the modern era, software is commonly delivered as a service: called web apps, or software-as-a-service. The twelve-factor app is a methodology for building software-as-a-service apps that:

Use declarative formats for setup automation, to minimize time and cost for new developers joining the project;
Have a clean contract with the underlying operating system, offering maximum portability between execution environments;
Are suitable for deployment on modern cloud platforms, obviating the need for servers and systems administration;
Minimize divergence between development and production, enabling continuous deployment for maximum agility;
And can scale up without significant changes to tooling, architecture, or development practices.

The twelve-factor methodology can be applied to apps written in any programming language, and which use any combination of backing services (database, queue, memory cache, etc).
Mickael Ruau's insight:
Who should read this document?

Any developer building applications which run as a service. Ops engineers who deploy or manage such applications.

The Twelve Factors

I. Codebase

One codebase tracked in revision control, many deploys

II. Dependencies

Explicitly declare and isolate dependencies

III. Config

Store config in the environment

IV. Backing services

Treat backing services as attached resources

V. Build, release, run

Strictly separate build and run stages

VI. Processes

Execute the app as one or more stateless processes

VII. Port binding

Export services via port binding

VIII. Concurrency

Scale out via the process model

IX. Disposability

Maximize robustness with fast startup and graceful shutdown

X. Dev/prod parity

Keep development, staging, and production as similar as possible

XI. Logs

Treat logs as event streams

XII. Admin processes

Run admin/management tasks as one-off processes

Kubernetes | Qu’est-ce que c’est ? - IONOS

Kubernetes | Qu’est-ce que c’est ? - IONOS | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it

Multi-stage builds #3: Why your build is surprisingly slow, and how to speed it up

Multi-stage builds #3: Why your build is surprisingly slow, and how to speed it up | Devops for Growth | Scoop.it
If you want your Docker images to be small and you still want fast builds, multi-stage images are the way to go. And yet, you might find that multi-stage builds are actually quite slow in practice, in particular when running in your build pipeline. If that’s happening, a bit of digging is likely to show that even though you copied your standard build script, somehow the first stage of the Dockerfile gets rebuilt every single time. Unless you’re very careful, Docker’s build cache often won’t work for multi-stage builds—and that means your build is slow. What’s going on? In this article you will learn: Why multi-stage builds don’t work with the standard build process you’re used to for single-stage images. How to solve the problem and get fast builds. Note: Outside the specific topic under discussion, the Dockerfiles in this article are not examples of best practices, since the added complexity would obscure the main point of the article. How to Use Ansible to Install and Set Up Docker on Ubuntu 18.04

With the popularization of containerized applications and microservices, server automation now plays an essential role in systems administration. It is also a way to establish standard procedures for new servers and reduce human error.

This guide explains how to use Ansible to automate the steps contained in our guide on How To Install and Use Docker on Ubuntu 18.04. Docker is an application that simplifies the process of managing containers, resource-isolated processes that behave in a similar way to virtual machines, but are more portable, more resource-friendly, and depend more heavily on the host operating system.

While you can complete this setup manually, using a configuration management tool like Ansible to automate the process will save you time and establish standard procedures that can be repeated through tens to hundreds of nodes. Ansible offers a simple architecture that doesn’t require special software to be installed on nodes, and it provides a robust set of features and built-in modules which facilitate writing automation scripts.

Mickael Ruau's insight:

Using Multi-Stage Builds to Simplify And Standardize Build Processes

Multi-stage Dockerfile builds can help shift information left and standardize commands in an elegant way.
Mickael Ruau's insight:

Imagine a normal pipeline for an application. It might look something like this:

Each of the stages — build, lint, test (unit, integration, accessibility, and regression), static code analysis, dynamic code analysis, and finally deployment — require access to different tools, systems, and binaries. Every time a developer runs a build or pushes to GitHub they could discover new issues in the pipeline and have to iterate to resolve them. This pushes information we want the developers to have to the right in the development process, which is suboptimal. There are two improvements that can be made to that process:

  1. Shifting the information left — Whether it’s security, compliance, accessibility, code coverage, or linting, we want developers to have access to the results as early in the process as possible.
  2. Standardizing the commands — This way no matter where the particular stage is run, the same results are returned.

Multi-stage Dockerfile builds solve both of these problems in an elegant way. Leveraging multi-stage Dockerfiles mean that a developer can run the exact same command as the CICD server, and because it’s running in a container, the same results should be returned every time.

What Are Multi-Stage Builds?

Multi-stage builds are a method of organizing a Dockerfile to minimize the size of the final container, improve run time performance, allow for better organization of Docker commands and files, and provide a standardized method of running build actions. A multi-stage build is done by creating different sections of a Dockerfile, each referencing a different base image. This allows a multi-stage build to fulfill a function previously filled by using multiple docker files, copying files between containers, or running different pipelines.

For more specific reading on the specifications of a multi-stage Docker build please see here.
