Summer School in Computational and Theoretical Models in Neuroscience - Venice 09-14 September 2019

Approaches and techniques from Physics, Mathematics and Computational Science are increasingly becoming critical for understanding and modelling the brain, and also for designing and interpreting experiments. Modeling is an essential tool to cut through the vast complexity of neurobiological systems and their many interacting elements. 

 ConTaMiNEURO 2019 wants to convey central ideas, methods, and practices of modern computational neuroscience through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and seminars. During the course’s mornings, distinguished international faculty deliver lectures and seminars on selected topics in computational neuroscience (see below). For the remainder of the time, students work on research projects in teams of 3-4 people under close supervision of expert tutors and faculty. Research projects will include data analyses and the development of theories to explain experimental observations.

The workshop Complexity72h is an interdisciplinary event whose aim is to bring together young researchers from different fields of complex systems.

Inspired by the 72h Hours of Science, participants will form working groups aimed at carrying out a project in a three-day time, i.e. 72 hours. Each group's goal is to upload on the arXiv a report of their work by the end of the event. A team of tutors will propose the projects, and assist and guide each group in developing their project.
Alongside teamwork, participants will attend lectures from scientists coming from different fields of complex systems, and applied workshops.
The workshop is organized and will be hosted by the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca.

The SFI Complex Systems Summer School (CSSS) offers an intensive 4-week introduction to complex behavior in mathematical, physical, living, and social systems. Lectures are taught by the faculty of the Santa Fe Institute (SFI) and other leading educators and scholars. The school is for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and professionals seeking to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, take intellectual risks, and ask big questions about complex systems.

The program consists of an intensive series of lectures, labs, and discussions focusing on foundational concepts, tools, and current topics in complexity science. These include nonlinear dynamics, scaling theory, information theory, adaptation and evolution, networks, machine learning, agent-based models, and other topical areas and case studies. Participants collaborate in developing novel research projects throughout the four weeks of the program that culminate in final presentations and papers.

How Can Artificial Life Help Solve Societal Challenges?

Artificial Life has historically been regarded by its adversaries as an academic “hobby” with little relation to real life. We feel that these days are past, as in fact, our interdisciplinary and constantly self-innovating discipline brings together a set of skills and perspectives with a unique potential to tackle some of the most pressing societal challenges of our times. The theme “How can Artificial Life help to solve Societal Challenges” will run through the conference in the shape of keynote presentations and satellite events that apply Artificial Life principles to research on sustainable technologies, bioremediation, urban development and environmental planning, alternative societies a.s.o.But more than merely theming presentations, ALIFE2019 in Newcastle plans to revisit the very way academic conferences are run: a balanced amount of remote talks as well as broadcasting of presentations in order to reduce CO2 emissions, carbon-offset bursaries that allow participants to diminish their ecological footprint, locally sourced catering – these are just a few of the ideas that the organizers will explore, so that us academics can realize some of the change we are advocating for.

Swarm robotics is the domain of robotics that deals with large groups of robots that coordinately and cooperatively accomplish a task.
Inspired by natural self-organising systems like ant colonies, fish schools or bird flocks, the goal of swarm robotics research is to deploy complex robotics systems that present robustness to faults, scalability to different group sizes, flexibility of the displayed behaviour and adaptivity to environmental changes.
The problems faced by swarm robotics concerns mainly the analysis of complex systems formed by a multitude of interacting units, the design of individual level rules leading to desired collective behaviours, and the application of the lessons learned in lab research to real-world domains. The workshop will discuss cutting-edge research in all these directions thanks to a great assembly of invited speakers, and will represent a unique place where to trace the future of this research field beyond the state of the art.

After the success of the Satellite at ECCS 2014 and CCS 2016, we would like to propose a follow-up Satellite always focusing on Robustness, Adaptability and Critical Transitions in Living Systems 

Living systems are characterized by the recurrent emergence of patterns: power-laws distributions, long-range correlations and structured self-organization in living matter are the norm, rather than the exception. All these features are also typical of thermo-dynamical systems poised near a critical point. The great lesson from physics is that criticality can emerge as a collective behaviour in a many-body system with simple (e.g. pairwise) interactions and its characteristics depend only on few details like the dimensionality or symmetries. 

In a statistical-mechanics approach, it is fundamental to determine the order parameter, which characterizes the different system phases. This is a crucial step to obtain the key ingredients needed to formulate a modeling framework, so as to obtain a better understanding of the system's macroscopic behaviour. However, the understating of biological/social systems needs more than a mere generalization of the standard statistical mechanics approach. 

One of the most striking feature of living systems is that they are structured as evolving systems were interactions can turn-on or off, as well as strengthening and weakening, reconfiguring the system connectivity. Thus, by rearranging both the structural and functional topology, living interacting systems may demonstrate unique evolvability, scalability and adaptability properties. 

It is of crucial importance to make further steps in the understanding of the main properties that simultaneously confer to these systems high level of both adaptability and robustness. If we can “learn” from evolution, then we would be able to both better manage/supervise these systems and also design more optimal and sustainable new systems.

In recent years, research efforts addressing the needs of the most vulnerable populations -- from those with low incomes to children, women and other minorities -- have started to draw the attention of the scientific community. Notable examples in this space are the Data for Development and Data For Refugees challenges, organized by Orange and TurkTelecom respectively. However, the gap between the academic world and the organizations that could use the proposed methods and insights for their programmatic purposes is still wide. This satellite workshop, organized by UNICEF’s Office of Innovation, aims at focusing the attention of the Complex System scientific community on the pressing issues that affect the most vulnerable. In addition, this will be a venue to showcase the most relevant theoretical and operational work in complex systems research -- where the challenges of the most vulnerable are a core component.

The Conference on Complex Systems (CCS) is the biggest and most important annual meeting of the international complex systems community. It comes under the auspices of the Complex Systems Society. Since its inception in 2004, CCS had always been Europe-based, but in 2015 & 2017, it moved to North & Latin America respectively.

In 2019, CCS will come to Asia for the first time. Held in Singapore at Nanyang Technological University, it promises an intellectually stimulating experience to be matched by an equally exciting social programme. ​

Complexcity@POLITO – Turin, Italy, October 29-30 2018

The workshop is the 13th of a series of tutorial workshops annually organized to explore the emergence of new research fields in which modeling, analysis and control of nonlinear and complex systems play a role of growing importance. These workshops have been traditionally devoted to an interdisciplinary audience with particular attention to PhD students and young researchers. The theme of this year is “Complexity and The City” with a unique focus on interactions, mobility, epidemics, information and misinformation spreading, and many other complex phenomena occurring in urban environments.

The workshop will gather scholars, students, and practitioners for two days of presentations and debates around complex systems science and its interplay with urban environments. A series of plenary lectures from renowned scholars is planned, while PhD students and young researchers will have dedicated sessions to present their research activity in an effective and appealing way. Social events will foster interaction and creation of collaboration opportunities.

UrbanSys 2018

Following a series of successful satellites organised at previous ECCS/CCS events, (UrbanNet2013 at ECCS13, CitiNet 2014 at ECCS14, UrbanNet2015 at NetSci 2015, UrbanNet2016 at CCS2016 and UrbanSys2017 at CCS2017), the objective of the UrbanSys2018 satellite of CCS2018 is to create a space for exchanging state-of-the-art results and innovative ideas on how to address the problems and opportunities opened by smart cities through complex systems theory and methodologies. In this sense, we have launched a call for contributions for the satellite. Particular attention will be devoted to new data-driven approaches for improving the planning and management of urban infrastructures, including land use, transportation, energy and tourism planning, to mention some examples.
