NERCCS 2024: The Seventh Northeast Regional Conference on Complex Systems will follow the success of the previous NERCCS conferences to promote the emerging venue of interdisciplinary scholarly exchange for complex systems researchers in the Northeast U.S. region (and beyond) to share their research outcomes through presentations and online publications, network with their peers, and promote interdisciplinary collaboration and the growth of the research community.
NERCCS will particularly focus on facilitating the professional growth of early career faculty, postdocs, and students in the region who will likely play a leading role in the field of complex systems science and engineering in the coming years.

The International Conference on Complex Networks (CompleNet) brings together researchers and practitioners from diverse disciplines working on areas related to complex networks. CompleNet has been an active conference since 2009. In its 15th year, we are very enthusiastic to bring it back to Exeter after the 2020 event had to be cancelled due to COVID. It will be hosted by the University of Exeter in late April. Over the past two decades, we have witnessed an exponential increase in the number of publications and research centres dedicated to this field of Complex Networks (aka Network Science). From biological systems to computer science, from technical to informational networks, and from economic to social systems, complex networks are becoming pervasive for dozens of applications. It is the interdisciplinary nature of complex networks that CompleNet aims to capture and celebrate. The CompleNet conference is one of the most cherished events by scientists in our field. Maybe it is because of its motivating format, consisting of plenary sessions (no parallel sessions); or perhaps the reason is that it finds the perfect balance between young and senior participation, a balance in the demographics of the presenters, or perhaps it is just the quality of the work presented. 25-26 May 2023, Stockholm, Sweden BrainNet workshop brings together researchers working within or at the intersection of complex networks, data analysis, neuroscience, and mathematics. The Enrico Fermi Research Centre - CREF (Rome) and UNU-MERIT (Maastricht), in collaboration with the Young Scholar Initiative of the Institute of New Economic Thinking are now calling for submissions to the first Economic Fitness and Complexity spring school, which will be held on June 5-9, 2023 in Rome, Italy. The school is an extensive introduction to the economic complexity framework, with theoretical and practical lessons. The first three days will focus on theoretical and practical classes covering the following topics: economic complexity measurement, network theory, machine learning, measurement of relatedness. Theoretical lectures will be followed by coding labs, where participants will have the chance to apply the methodologies introduced in class, and to carry out assigned group projects, focusing on the school core themes. For the last two days of the school, many world-wide renowned scholars have been invited to present their frontier research linking economic complexity with economic development, economic geography, labour economics, sustainability, economics of science, and innovation policy. Catania, Sicily 25 - 30 June 2023 In the last decade, network theory has been revealed to be a perfect instrument to model the structure of complex systems and the dynamical process they are involved into. The wide variety of applications to social sciences, technological networks, biology, transportation and economic, to cite just only some of them, showed that network theory is suitable to provide new insights into many problems.

The Center Leo Apostel for Transdisciplinary Studies (CLEA) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) organises its first international artscience conference: ‘Systems At Play: A Self-Organising Symposium on Self-Organisation’ taking place in Brussels from February 15th until 18th, 2023.
The ‘Systems at Play’ symposium starts from the understanding that art and science are mutually beneficial means of perception and insight creation. It thus provides a transdisciplinary contact zone for artists and scientists to meet, exchange, think, share, take time, and, ultimately, play together.
Then, what shall we talk and play about? Well, it’s up to you where it ends up, but our starting points are the ideas of ‘emergence’, ‘self-organisation’, and ‘goal-directedness’.
As far as goals go, the symposium invites you to tackle creative challenges collectively. During the symposium, participating artists and scientists will together create ‘embodied models of emergence’ in the form of live games, scores, presentations, conversations or small algorithmic performances. We will offer inputs to this process in the form of presentations, talks and workshops during the day; as well as an evening programme of immersive and interactive performances and film screenings. June 11 - July 7, 2023. Complex Systems Summer School (CSSS) offers an intensive four-week introduction to complex behavior in mathematical, physical, living, and social systems. CSSS brings together graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and professionals to transcend disciplinary boundaries, take intellectual risks, and ask big questions about complex systems. The residential program comprises a series of lectures and workshops devoted to theory and tools, applications-focused seminars, and discussions with faculty and fellow participants. CSSS participants put what they learn from these didactic sessions into practice through group research projects, conducted throughout the program and often extending into manuscripts and longer-term collaborations. CSSS provides an unparalleled opportunity for early-career researchers to expand their professional networks, produce a novel research product, and gain valuable experience working in transdisciplinary teams. The overwhelming majority of humanity lives in large-scale urbanized societies organized as states. This is an evolutionary novel condition—for over 90% of our history humans lived in small-scale societies of hunters and gatherers. This remarkable transformation of human societies is considered to be one of the Major Evolutionary Transitions. But this transition is not yet complete. Unlike biological organisms, or colonies of social insects, human societies are not “organismal-like”. There are huge differences in effectiveness of governance and economic performance among nations. Further, all complex societies (so far, without exceptions) have gone through recurrent integrative and disintegrative phases, marked first by cooperation and growth and then stasis/decline and increased internal violence and immiseration.
In the CSH Winter School 2023 we review fundamental organizational principles of complex human societies, states and cities, and study a wide range of integrative and disintegrative tendencies within them. Our focus is on the balance between centripetal forces, powered by selection on collectives (cities, states, and other polities) and centrifugal forces, arising from the “selfishness” of lower-level units within collectives (special interest groups, kinship networks, and corrupt leaders).
The school will bring together an international, interdisciplinary cast of lecturers and students to review and explore both theoretical and empirical directions currently advanced by different research groups. The field of complex systems, which is mathematically broad and interdisciplinary, concerns the study of individual entities that interact to produce collective dynamics. Complex social systems include the spread of memes on Twitter, the adoption and evolution of opinions during political discourse, and the formation of social movements that can affect both norms and policy. In all of these examples, the interactions of individuals, as well as how they react to external forces and shape their environment, lead to emergent features. Uncovering these interactions and determining how behaviors affect group-level dynamics has important societal implications. Complex social systems also inspire the development of new methods and draw on many different areas, including computational social science, political science, economics, legal scholarship, mathematical and statistical modeling, data and network analysis, dynamical systems, probability, and scientific computation. The intersection of society, data, and computation in complex social systems creates an inherently interdisciplinary problem space, with a need for community-building between experts from a variety of backgrounds (including many who may not traditionally participate in mathematics research). This MRC aims to introduce early-career researchers to complex social systems and to foster new collaborations among mathematical, computational, and social scientists. MRC participants will come from a wide variety of mathematical and computational subfields and disciplinary traditions. We will explore some of the key methods and applications in complex systems, and we will engage in interdisciplinary research to attack open questions ranging from theoretical problems that are inspired by complex systems to data-analysis projects in social justice. The December 2023 Complexity Global School (CGS) is a collaboration between the Indian Insitute of Technology Bombay (IITB) in India, the Santa Fe Institute (SFI) in the USA, and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa. The Complexity Global program is supported by the Emergent Political Economies grant, awarded to SFI in 2022.

The world is changing. The political and economic paradigms that dominated global affairs in the 20th Century were largely based on linear thinking, and often originated from within disciplinary and cultural silos. The challenges now facing humanity require new ideas. A global perspective is needed; the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and University of the Witwatersrand are among the top universities in Asia and Africa respectively. A non-linear, or complex, perspective is also needed; for almost 40 years, the Santa Fe Institute has coordinated a network of complexity scholars from top universities around the world. Complexity72h is an interdisciplinary workshop for young researchers in complex systems. Participants form teams and carry out projects in a three days' time, i.e. 72 hours. The goal of each team is to upload on the arXiv (or similar repositories) a report of their work by the end of the event. The editions of 2018 and 2019 were a success: 11 out of 11 projects became arXiv preprints and new collaborations were born. What is the nature of intelligence in social insect societies, adaptive matter, groups of cells like brains, sports teams, and AI, and how does it arise in these seemingly different kinds of collectives? The Symposium & Short Course will search for unifying principles in collective intelligence by tackling its foundations, and explore radical ideas for harnessing collective potential. The event will begin with a broad discussion of first-principles approaches from the physical and natural sciences for deriving group performance from microscopic, individual-level behavior and interactions. Participants will debate the most promising measures of intelligence across systems and consider the dynamics of collective intelligence in changing environments. Finally, we will explore radical ideas for harnessing collective intelligence in human and hybrid systems and invite scholars, artists, writers, musicians, actors, directors, dancers, and inventors, in addition to scientists, to participate in this discussion. The Oxford Summer School in Economic Networks seeks to create a stimulating and friendly environment to bring students from varied disciplines together to learn about theories, techniques, quantitative methods, applications and impacts of network theory within economics.

Conference Theme: Ghosts in the machine
Artificial life seeks to unravel the mysteries of life and mind, to naturalise the “ghosts in the machine”. What is life? What is the mind? Are these two concepts related? These ghosts are however elusive, and difficult to identify or even just define at times. To try and learn more about the mind, research in artificial life and other related fields has more recently focused on studies of complexity, emergence, agency, autonomy, or information theory. As a results, this has led to major advancements in robotics, synthetic biology and artificial intelligence, among others. The main research programs in these areas however seem to be simply forgetting about the mind, rather than trying to explain it. At the same time, with the advent of new technologies such as brain-machine interface, cyborgization, virtual/augmented reality and the metaverse, the boundaries between agents/living organisms and their environment have began fluctuating. Minds are no longer in our (living organism) shells, expanding beyond current spatial boundaries and into a new form of the "extended mind" hypothesis. At ALIFE 2023, we will bring back the focus to studies of the mind, facing the challenges and embracing the opportunities that come with studies of an often neglected but ever so important concept in both artificial life research and our daily lives.

Many real systems can be modeled as networks, where the elements of the system are nodes and interactions between elements are edges. An even larger set of systems can be modeled using dynamical processes on networks, which are in turn affected by the dynamics. Networks thus represent the backbone of many complex systems, and their theoretical and computational analysis makes it possible to gain insights into numerous applications. Networks permeate almost every conceivable discipline —including sociology, transportation, economics and finance, biology, and myriad others — and the study of “network science” has thus become a crucial component of modern scientific education.
The school “Complex Networks: Theory, Methods, and Applications” offers a succinct education in network science. It is open to all aspiring scholars in any area of science or engineering who wish to study networks of any kind (whether theoretical or applied), and it is especially addressed to doctoral students and young postdoctoral scholars. The aim of the school is to deepen into both theoretical developments and applications in targeted fields.
