Create a Presentation With Curated Social Media Content: Slidestaxx

Create a Presentation With Curated Social Media Content: Slidestaxx | Digital Curation in Education | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Slidestaxx is a web-based service which allows anyone to easily create a shareable and embeddable visual slide-show by selecting and bringing together existing images, video clips, web sites and other content already available online.

My take: I like the idea of being able to produce presentations that contain properly "credited" third party content, but it would be even better to have these functionality integrated in your existing favorite presentation tool rather than elsewhere.

I think that this curation-presentation format suffers from the natural constraints of how we look at presentations. One slide at a time. I think that any curated-format benefits from providing the possibility to see both the detail and the larger picture and in this case I feel that the ability to see the presentation, also as an album, woud greatly benefit the value and benefits of this tool.

The service is free to use.

Moving at the Speed of Creativity - Create Clever Information Traps with Zoo Tool, Posterous, & ifttt

Moving at the Speed of Creativity - Create Clever Information Traps with Zoo Tool, Posterous, & ifttt | Digital Curation in Education | Scoop.it

Not only a great example of a screencast but some amazing advice about managing our socially networked lives by Wes Fryer. Living as we do in a sea of digital information, we all need to set and manage clever “information traps.” The reason is simple: Every day we encounter useful, digital “stuff” we want to save for later and in many cases share with others. In this post, I’ll describe how to use Zoo Tool, Posterous, ifttt (if this then that) and email to create an information trap which takes a link and simultaneously:

saves it to Diigo (my primary social bookmarking site)saves it to a “quick blog” I created on Posterous for stuff I’m reading (wesread.posterous.com) Subscribes to the blog or site in my Google Reader if it has an available RSS feedTweets out the link if I choose to share it with a special tag (zt for “zoo tool”)

The Ability To Extract and Communicate Insight from Data It's Going To Be Huge: McKinsey Quarterly [Video]

The Ability To Extract and Communicate Insight from Data It's Going To Be Huge: McKinsey Quarterly [Video] | Digital Curation in Education | Scoop.it

Robin Good: In January of 2009 the McKinsey Quarterly published a video interview and a full article entitled "Hal Varian on how the Web challenges managers" in which Google’s chief economist told executives in wired organizations how much they needed a sharper understanding of how technology empowers innovation.

In the video, Hal Varian says something that if you are trying to understand the emerging curation trend, is as relevant (if not more) today as three years ago when it was first published:

"The ability to take data - to be able to understand it, to process it, to extract value from it, to visualize it, to communicate it's going to be a hugely important skill in the next decades, not only at the professional level but even at the educational level for elementary school kids, for high school kids, for college kids.

Because now we really do have essentially free and ubiquitous data.

So the complimentary scarce factor is the ability to understand that data and extract value from it.

I think statisticians are part of it, but it's just a part.

You also want to be able to visualize the data, communicate the data, and utilize it effectively.

But I do think those skills - of being able to access, understand, and communicate the insights you get from data analysis - are going to be extremely important..."

Video interview: http://bit.ly/googlehalvarianoncuration ;

(go to the section "Workers and managers")

You will need to register to read the full original article: http://www.mckinseyquarterly.com/Hal_Varian_on_how_the_Web_challenges_managers_2286 ;

<- and so what does this mean for education? For educators? For managers? For learners? Can curation skills help them? What do these curation skills consist of? (JS)

Storify Curation Tool Adds Conversation With Livefyre Comments | ReadWriteWeb | Digital Curation in Education | Scoop.it

Storify, the Twitter and multi-media curation service that's taken the indie and mainstream media worlds by storm, finally added the ability to post comments on stories tonight with the experimental addition of independent commenting platform Livefyre. Storify hasn't announced the feature yet, but Livefyre has.

In order to opt-in to comments on your Storify, users must click the settings button near their logged-in avatars in the top right of the page. Then a link to the Labs page will appear on the left side, which today contains nothing more than a check-box to turn on Livefyre.
