This week, students and teachers are beginning to return to school here in Australia. return: “an act of coming or going back to a place or activity” It’s a word I have been trying to avoid as I speak with my partner schools. Instead of thinking about it as a return to…let’s think about it as a new chapter, a move forward.

As we all reflect on 2020 with similar, yet different views depending on your geographical location, David Price outlines 'three factors that will shape how we turn that glimpse of the future into a shared, daily vision...
1) how we act is governed by how we feel. Hope triggers action while fear triggers inaction... 2) actions that result in positive outcomes can only be informed by reason, logic and truth... 3) although we’re not ‘all in this together’ — the pandemic has demonstrated that some people are experiencing a far worse crisis than others — we are all focussed upon this together.

'This crisis exposes the many inequities in our education systems – from the broadband and computers needed for online education, through to the supportive environments needed to focus on learning, up to our failure to attract talented teachers to the most challenging classrooms. But as these inequities are amplified in this time of crisis, this moment also holds the possibility that we won’t return to the inequitable status quo when things return to “normal”. We have agency, and it is the nature of our collective and systemic responses to the disruptions that will determine how we are affected by them.'

So many valuable insights here (which I listened to as a podcast whilst walking!)...'Throughout this process, it may be helpful to occasionally stop and just let yourself grieve all the incredible experiences teachers and students won’t get to have right now and for the foreseeable future. Although dwelling on this for long periods of time won’t be terribly useful, it also doesn’t help to pretend any of this is normal. Acknowledging the loss will allow you, your colleagues, and your students to feel validated, and this could free you up to move on and do what you can under the current constraints.'

Motivation and curiosity might be tough to think about during a pandemic, but they can play critical roles in strengthening relationships and streamlining curricular constraints.

'Empowering students to feel like they have agency over their curriculum can be as simple as offering a few options on assignments and classroom activities or asking for feedback on what is working, according to Bonawitz. These small actions can have a huge effect on whether students feel like they are the drivers of their own learning. The pandemic has restricted so many young people’s everyday activities and interactions. That’s why the ability to choose can go a long way.

These days, more than trying to adapt to this "new normality", we are hoping things to get back to normal as soon as possible. However, we don't always think about some specic cases like education, how is education dealing with remote teaching and what kinds of priorities have emerged during the pandemic. This article provides interesting insights on how emotional and mental health has been hardly affected by COVID-19 which in turn is affecting students' motivation and schools organization.

Amid the homeschooling horror stories, a "different" way of learning has had a positive impact on some families, encouraging them to consider taking a "step outside the system" when it comes to their kids' education.

Time to reset and move forward..."As it turned out, the experience was highly positive and we created our own, flexible homeschool environment. We started each day with a surf and time outdoors and my son then felt calm and ready to learn. We were able to work at his pace, his confidence grew and he thrived with the one-on-one help."
