2021: The Year Of Hope. We’re witnessing the last knockings of… | by David Price | Dec, 2020 | COVID-19 Teaching & Learning during a pandemic | Scoop.it

"We’re witnessing the last knockings of 2020 (as Charlie Brooker said, ‘so good they named it twice’). It’s a time to look backwards and forwards — except this year our collective psyche seems poised on a knife-edge."

Maree Whiteley's insight:
As we all reflect on 2020 with similar, yet different views depending on your geographical location, David Price outlines 'three factors that will shape how we turn that glimpse of the future into a shared, daily vision...
1) how we act is governed by how we feel. Hope triggers action while fear triggers inaction...
2) actions that result in positive outcomes can only be informed by reason, logic and truth...
3) although we’re not ‘all in this together’ — the pandemic has demonstrated that some people are experiencing a far worse crisis than others — we are all focussed upon this together.

20 things I learned in 2020. | COVID-19 Teaching & Learning during a pandemic | Scoop.it
I have written less in 2020 on this blog than in any other year since starting it in 2014. Like many, I have been busy, shell shocked, wrung dry, and spread thin by the events (personal, local and global) of this year. Before this one there have been 20 blog posts in 2020. I almost didn’t…
Maree Whiteley's insight:
So many words of wisdom here...
#9 'Meaningful work is crucial to wellbeing'
#16 '...leaders must simultaneously consider the possible, the human, and the humane.” #leadershipmatters #alwayslearning 20 things I learned in 2020 - reflections from Dr Deborah Netolicky - Insightful, practical & hopeful as we head into 2021 and beyond.

Kids will need recess more than ever when returning to school post-coronavirus

Kids will need recess more than ever when returning to school post-coronavirus | COVID-19 Teaching & Learning during a pandemic | Scoop.it
Global experts in child development say recess will be critical for children’s well-being when schools reopen, so education authorities should see planning recess as a high priority.
Maree Whiteley's insight:
This article should resonate with EVERY school community as children transition back to their 'structured' learning environments...'Recess is typically the only unstructured time in the school day that provides a setting for children’s physical, social and emotional development — all of which are foundational for mental well-being, school engagement and learning. But when children return to school, we must ensure recess is meaningful, playful and inclusive. Why is recess so important, and why now?'

How can teachers and school systems respond to the COVID-19 pandemic? Some lessons from TALIS

How can teachers and school systems respond to the COVID-19 pandemic? Some lessons from TALIS | COVID-19 Teaching & Learning during a pandemic | Scoop.it
Consequences of the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis will hit those worst off hardest. Education is no exception. How prepared are our teachers and schools?
Maree Whiteley's insight:
'This crisis exposes the many inequities in our education systems – from the broadband and computers needed for online education, through to the supportive environments needed to focus on learning, up to our failure to attract talented teachers to the most challenging classrooms. But as these inequities are amplified in this time of crisis, this moment also holds the possibility that we won’t return to the inequitable status quo when things return to “normal”. We have agency, and it is the nature of our collective and systemic responses to the disruptions that will determine how we are affected by them.'

Wanted: Artifacts that show how Americans navigated the Covid-19 crisis. The trick is determining what’s historically valuable.
Maree Whiteley's insight:
How will our children's voices retell this time in history?
"He wrote in big blocky letters: “I did not go anywhere,” and added an unhappy face in green and red crayon for his remote-learning assignment. This may be the first time a first grader's homework is headed to a permanent museum collection instead of a parent’s refrigerator door..."

Reopening School: What It Might Look Like

Reopening School: What It Might Look Like | COVID-19 Teaching & Learning during a pandemic | Scoop.it
Some thoughts on what post-COVID instruction might look like. (Spoiler alert: None are as good as face-to-face, but a few aren't too bad.)
Maree Whiteley's insight:
So many valuable insights here (which I listened to as a podcast whilst walking!)...'Throughout this process, it may be helpful to occasionally stop and just let yourself grieve all the incredible experiences teachers and students won’t get to have right now and for the foreseeable future. Although dwelling on this for long periods of time won’t be terribly useful, it also doesn’t help to pretend any of this is normal. Acknowledging the loss will allow you, your colleagues, and your students to feel validated, and this could free you up to move on and do what you can under the current constraints.'

'Every Kid is Motivated': Action-oriented Ideas to Revive Students' Curiosity - MindShift

'Every Kid is Motivated': Action-oriented Ideas to Revive Students' Curiosity - MindShift | COVID-19 Teaching & Learning during a pandemic | Scoop.it
Motivation and curiosity might be tough to think about during a pandemic, but they can play critical roles in strengthening relationships and streamlining curricular constraints.
Maree Whiteley's insight:
'Empowering students to feel like they have agency over their curriculum can be as simple as offering a few options on assignments and classroom activities or asking for feedback on what is working, according to Bonawitz. These small actions can have a huge effect on whether students feel like they are the drivers of their own learning. The pandemic has restricted so many young people’s everyday activities and interactions. That’s why the ability to choose can go a long way.

K-12 education and the coronavirus | McKinsey

K-12 education and the coronavirus | McKinsey | COVID-19 Teaching & Learning during a pandemic | Scoop.it
Now that the immediate rush of closing K–12 schools is over, school systems must focus on four major priorities--and put equity front and center.
Maree Whiteley's insight:
In this McKinsey report, we get a global view of education as the coronavirus spreads similar issues world-wide...'As of mid-April 2020, 191 countries had shut down all their primary and secondary schools, affecting almost 1.6 billion children. The shift to remote learning has been uneven.Student and staff health needs will not end with the virus—schools should plan to deal with heightened mental and physical health issues long after the pandemic subsides.'
Sebastián Osorio's curator insight, November 26, 2020 3:11 PM
These days, more than trying to adapt to this "new normality", we are hoping things to get back to normal as soon as possible. However, we don't always think about some specic cases like education, how is education dealing with remote teaching and what kinds of priorities have emerged during the pandemic. This article provides interesting insights on how emotional and mental health has been hardly affected by COVID-19 which in turn is affecting students' motivation and schools organization.

The Commissioner is continuing work to support children, young people and their families during the coronavirus pandemic.
Maree Whiteley's insight:
From the Commissioner for Children and Young People WA...'It is vital at this time that we all consider the safety and wellbeing of our children and young people. We need to be proactive in helping them to understand what is occurring in the world right now and reassure them that they are not alone in feeling anxious. I have asked WA children and young people to share with me how their day-to-day lives have been impacted and what helps them to stay positive during this time, and there are several ways in which we are monitoring how children are feeling.'

Amid the homeschooling horror stories, a "different" way of learning has had a positive impact on some families, encouraging them to consider taking a "step outside the system" when it comes to their kids' education.
Maree Whiteley's insight:
Time to reset and move forward..."As it turned out, the experience was highly positive and we created our own, flexible homeschool environment.
