The effects of recent foreign currency exchange rate (FX) fluctuations and the resulting stronger U.S. dollar have had a significant impact on corporate earnings at many U.S.-based companies with significant non-U.S. operations. Because the magnitude of these FX fluctuations was not anticipated in the budgeting or incentive plan goal setting process, the treatment of FX in calculating incentives has become a boardroom topic. Shareholders also are interested in the resolution of this issue, as many investors want to see a stronger correlation between compensation and company performance.
