Bilingualism as a Life Experience

Bilingualism as a Life Experience | committedtolanguage | Scoop.it
What do we know about bilingualism? Much of what we once thought we knew — that speaking two languages is confusing for children, that it poses cognitive challenges best avoided — is now known to be inaccurate. Today, bilingualism is often seen as a brain-sharpening benefit, a condition that can protect and preserve cognitive function well into old age.  Indeed, the very notion of bilingualism is changing; language mastery is no longer seen as an either/or proposition, even though most schools still measure English proficiency as a binary “pass or fail” marker.

Susan Berkowitz's curator insight, March 1, 2015 12:40 PM

Kids learn so much language while engaged with books. Creating their own books is a great - and necessary - activity for children.  Building language and literacy skills through narratives - stories about themselves - gives kids the needed skills for conversations, literacy, and other academic areas.  Build communicative competence through self-created books.

How computers translate human language - Ioannis Papachimonas | committedtolanguage | Scoop.it
Is a universal translator possible in real life? We already have many
programs that claim to be able to take a word, sentence, or entire book
in one language and translate it into almost any other. The reality,
however, is a bit more complicated. Ioannis Papachimonas shows how these
machine translators work, and explains why they often get a bit mixed
up.
