US’ Top Five Trading Partners

US’ Top Five Trading Partners | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The U.S.’ top five trading partner countries for goods in 2016 were China, Canada, Mexico, Japan and Germany, according to full year 2016 U.S.
PIRatE Lab's insight:
Interesting how large a role vehicles plays in this.  The prominence of pharmaceuticals will also be surprising to some.  Oil only shows up in the top items with regards to imports from Canada (as far as our top 5 trading partners goes).

It goes without saying that Canada and Mexico primarily bring in materials via land.  Virtually all the rest of this comes and goes via our global network of shipping.

'Biodegradable' plastics are not so great for the oceans, says UN | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it

It doesn't actually biodegrade in most ocean conditions, and it probably shouldn't be recycled with other plastics.

PIRatE Lab's insight:

This is a common issue with many of our "degradable" plastics.  They are typically degrade by direct UV exposure and not when buried, subsurface, etc.

PIRatE Lab's insight:

So we have to kill it to save it, eh?

You mean taking a blood draw and some feather pulls isn't sufficient even after all the morphometrics the mist netting crews normally collect?

This guy is a tool.  If these birds were so common and he was so good, how is it he had to search for 20 years to find it?

Donald Rodriguez's curator insight, November 3, 2015 12:51 PM

I thought the days of "Killing for Science" were a thing of the past, but yet, there are those that still adhere to these old school creed.

High seas fishing ban could boost global catches, equality

High seas fishing ban could boost global catches, equality | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Analysis of fisheries data indicates that if increased spillover of fish stocks from protected international waters were to boost coastal catches by 18 per cent, current global catches would be maintained. When the researchers modeled less conservative estimates of stock spillover, catches in coastal waters surpassed current global levels.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

Clearly the high seas are the unregulated underbelly of the planet.  This is an interesting study that gives an estimate of how much productivity is being taken out of the global ocean outside of 200nm limit zones proximate to land.  But (as always) this issue is enforcement.
