Plastic-eating enzyme 'cocktail' heralds new hope for plastic waste

Plastic-eating enzyme 'cocktail' heralds new hope for plastic waste | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The same team who re-engineered the plastic-eating enzyme PETase have now created an enzyme 'cocktail' which can digest plastic up to six times faster.

Wow, this is insane. If this can get to the point where they can release it in places like the pacific garbage patch it would be very beneficial.
Tess Davidson-Henney's comment, October 2, 2020 6:31 PM
I love to hear things like this because I plastic is so ubiquitous and enduring. I wonder how they would implement it, though, without the chance of it getting out of control and, say, eating the plastic stuff that we still need. Granted, if that happened, we would have to quickly switch to plastic alternatives...which may not be a bad thing.

I agree with both Tess and Quinn, this is some great stuff. Like Tess was saying though, a lot of times there are unintended consequences. I think if we were to collect this plastic and put it in a secure location and then treat it with the enzyme , that may produce better results in a controlled environment.

Turbulent era sparked leap in human behavior, adaptability 320,000 years ago

Turbulent era sparked leap in human behavior, adaptability 320,000 years ago | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
The first analysis of a sedimentary drill core representing 1 million years of environmental history in the East African Rift Valley shows that at the same time early humans were abandoning old tools in favor of more sophisticated technology and broadening their trade, their landscape was experiencing frequent fluctuations in vegetation and water supply that made resources less reliably available. The findings suggest that instability in their landscape was a key driver of human adaptability.

So What Exactly is Hydro-Fracking? | Off The Grid News

So What Exactly is Hydro-Fracking? | Off The Grid News | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Christopher Michael Homokay's insight:
Hydraulic fracturing is not clean energy.  This form of unclean energy is the dregs next to excavating tar sands. The toxicological impacts of Fracking are known to cause death, public health emergencies, forced evacuation, fiery explosions, and the condemnation of once inhabitable land. If fracking were in my back yard, like it is near the ranches and neighborhoods around Moorpark College on Big Mountain,  I would post my real-estate of Zillow  before the development of irreversible neurological damage. The only industry I think is more damaging is the military industrial complex and global military operations.
