(Available in free full text) When it comes to living longer, reaching the oft-repeated goal of 10 000 steps per day may not be necessary. Older women who walked more than their peers had lower death rates in a recent observational study in JAMA Internal Medicine, and the mortality benefit was seen with as few as 4400 steps.

Consuming Alcohol Leads to Epigenetic Changes in Brain Memory Centers

Consuming Alcohol Leads to Epigenetic Changes in Brain Memory Centers  | Claudia | Scoop.it
New research revealed a surprising pathway that shows alcohol byproducts travel to the brain to promote addiction memory. They show how acetate travels to the brain's learning system and directly alters proteins the regulate DNA function, impacting how some genes are expressed and ultimately affecting how mice behave when given environmental cues to consume alcohol.

How Doing Yoga and Stretching Benefit Your Overall Wellbeing and Mental Health

How Doing Yoga and Stretching Benefit Your Overall Wellbeing and Mental Health | Claudia | Scoop.it
Yoga is not just about flexibility; it's also integral for healthy muscles, which boosts the health of your joints, in particular, your range of motion.

Did you know that stretching is essential for your body as a warm up for your joints, bones, range of motion, and it  helps to build healthy muscles to reduce risk of strains? Stretching also aids in unwanted weight loss and helps you maintain a healthy weight. Stretching increases needed blood flow which is essential for the brain and overall circulation, and stretching helps to improve your posture.

Yoga and many other exercise modalities include stretching in their exercises. Stretching can help calm your overworked mental monkey mind and bring you to a space of relaxation which reduces stress, and sometimes even helps you get into the state of meditation. Stretching can be considered as the first preparation to begin a practice like yoga, tai chi, qi gong, and other ancient modalities.

Health Tips:

Yoga focuses on lengthening your muscles for stretching as well as improving relaxation. Yoga is great for aligning the body, strengthening the body, and giving the body better balance. Yoga and other ancient modalities also focus on the breath. Through inhaling and exhaling you remain focused on the breath which also helps you to better meditate and remain focused.

Read the full article to learn more about the different type of stretches: Static (active and passive), Dynamic: prepping the body for a sport or activity (running, jumping, sprinting), Ballistic: Practice with a trainer to learn the correct method for repeated bouncing movement or athletic drills, Active Isolated Stretching: incorporating resistance training.
