 Congress of the Mediterranean Phytopathological Union
New Phytopathology Frontiers of Research and Education for Plant Health and Food Safety
The upcoming Congress of the Mediterranean Phytopathological Union, titled: “New Phytopathology Frontiers of Research and Education for Plant Health and Food Safety” aims to promote education and research as essential tools to address the new challenges of phytopathology and food safety, thereby raising community awareness and promoting a responsible, ecological and sustainable future.

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) has financed a programme entitled “SUPPORT AGRI-FOOD COOP NETWORK IN PALESTINE (SANET)”. CIHEAM Bari, as implementing body of the Result 3 named Agri-food sector inclusiveness improved to provide access to women and youth, and in partnership with Ministry of Agricolture of Palestine, will be responsible for its execution until September 2025.

Rome, 6 May 2023 – The Mediterranean diet continues to be recognised and promoted for its health benefits and its key role in preventing many diseases. On a weekly basis, the International Olive Council (IOC) reports through the OHIS platform it has created in collaboration with the University of Navarra on the results of research carried out on the “Mediterranean diet”, which was included in the 2010 UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The third independent Food Systems Summit Dialogue for the Mediterranean Region (SFS MED dialogue) is co-convened by the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), the One Planet Network’s Sustainable Food Systems Programme (OPN-SFSP) and the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) Foundation, and it is the prosecution of two other Independent Dialogues on “Pathways for the future of sustainable food systems in the Mediterranean” held in April and June 2021.

The CIHEAM Bari and Euphresco Network for phytosanitary research coordination and funding, organised an online International Workshop on the Plant Health Research Priorities for the Mediterranean Region on Wednesday 12 May 2021.
The event gathered 19 countries and the participants representing the International Organisations (the Arab Society for Plant Protection, the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization, the European Food Safety Authority, the International Plant Protection Convention Secretariat, the Interreg-Balkan Mediter, the Interreg-Med, the Joint Programming Initiative on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change, the Mediterranean Phytopathological Union, the Near-East Plant Protection Organization, the PRIMA Fondation, and the Union For the Mediterranean).

The 'Capacity Building to Develop Farmers Markets' training programme, organised under the Mediterranean and African Markets Initiative (MAMi - Farmers Markets) MAMi project, started today and will continue until 4 July 2024 in Alexandria, Egypt. FEED - The Knowledge Community launches a new call: ‘Tell us about legumes’. The call collects practices demonstrating how at least one step of the supply chain (cultivation, processing, cooking, storage) preserves or improves the nutritional value of legumes and makes them more palatable, how it has contributed to maintaining or improving soil productivity and quality, as well as biodiversity, implementing innovations that make the process more sustainable and promoting a change in consumers' diets and in the lives of local communities.

CIHEAM Bari, in collaboration with LUM University - Libera Università Mediterranea, School of Management - opens applications for the 2023-2024 International First Level University Master in "Open Innovation & Youth Entrepreneurship in the Mediterranean Agrifood Sector". The Master, in its fifth edition, envisages the active involvement of national and international companies, including Andriani SpA, Planetek Italia, Putignano & Figli, Tersan, Timac Agro Italia. So far, it has trained more than fifty managers of innovation.
