Distracted Driving Commercial Geared to Stop Texting and Driving - NBC News

Distracted Driving Commercial Geared to Stop Texting and Driving - NBC News | California Car Accident and Injury Attorney News | Scoop.it
The U.S. Department of Transportation intensified its message on Wednesday about the dangers of distracted driving with a shocking video on their new website...
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

As a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, I have seen more than my fair share of traffic collisions caused by distracted drivers using cell phones.  While it is illegal in most every state including California to text and drive, enforcement has proven difficult especially in large urban areas like Southern California.  Catching someone "in the act" is easier said than done.  Intense public education and "positive peer pressure" like this PSA may be a better alternative to reduce this dangerous practice.

Drivers ignoring child seat and seat belt rules are killing children
Los Angeles Times
It's probably a good guess that in many of these accidents, the adult driver was too inebriated to remember to buckle up young children safely.
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Great piece by the Los Angeles Times on an alarming trend of child injuries and deaths related to car accidents where child seat restraints are either not used or not used properly.  It is a stark reminder to us all to buckle up our kids!!

NHTSA’s Campaign Against Drunk Driving Starts Anew

NHTSA’s Campaign Against Drunk Driving Starts Anew | California Car Accident and Injury Attorney News | Scoop.it

Drunk driving in the United States is nothing new. These accidents always result in deaths of not only drunk drivers, but of innocent road users who are always in the receiving end of such mishaps, from drivers, passengers, bicyclists to pedestrians.

Via mackyanderson, David Slepkow
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

DUIs have steadily decreased in the past 15 to 20 years but, we seem to have reached a "plateau' in the reduction of injuries and deaths caused by drunk drivers.  Good to see a renewal of efforts to curb this dangerous driving technique.

Car black boxes provide crucial accident data - Video on NBCNews.com

Car black boxes provide crucial accident data - Video on NBCNews.com | California Car Accident and Injury Attorney News | Scoop.it
Video on msnbc.com: For decades there has been a great deal of attention given to making cars safer, but what most drivers don’t know is that a small recorder present in most of today’s cars is keeping track of critical data in case of...
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Interesting debate going on as to whether the data recorders in cars are a "privacy violation" or a necessary feature to promote car safety.  Many people don't realize that many modern vehicles have a recording device much like the "black boxes" in airplanes.  It records crucial data following an accident.  As a personal injury lawyer that represents car accident victims, I am interested in how these devices may assist in the investigation of accident claims and determinations as to how the incident occured and to whom legal fault should be attributed.
