IBM unveils "world's smallest computer" with blockchain at Think 2018

IBM unveils "world's smallest computer" with blockchain at Think 2018 | Bridging the Gaps | Scoop.it

March 19 is the first day of IBM Think 2018, the company's flagship conference, where the company will unveil what it claims is the world's smallest computer. They're not kidding: It's literally smaller than a grain of salt.

But don't let the size fool you: This sucker has the computing power of the x86 chip from 1990. Okay, so that's not great compared to what we have today, but cut it some slack — you need a microscope to see it.

The computer will cost less than ten cents to manufacture, and will also pack "several hundred thousand transistors," according to the company. These will allow it to "monitor, analyze, communicate, and even act on data."

According to IBM, this is only the beginning. "Within the next five years, cryptographic anchors — such as ink dots or tiny computers smaller than a grain of salt — will be embedded in everyday objects and devices," says IBM head of research Arvind Krishna. If he's correct, we'll see way more of these tiny systems in objects and devices in the years to come.

Finland: A country’s ambitious plan to teach anyone the basics of AI | #ArtificialIntelligence

Finland: A country’s ambitious plan to teach anyone the basics of AI | #ArtificialIntelligence | Bridging the Gaps | Scoop.it

In the era of AI superpowers, Finland is no match for the US and China. So the Scandinavian country is taking a different tack. It has embarked on an ambitious challenge to teach the basics of AI to 1% of its population, or 55,000 people. Once it reaches that goal, it plans to go further, increasing the share of the population with AI know-how. The scheme is all part of a greater effort to establish Finland as a leader in applying and using the technology.

Citizens take an online course that is specifically designed for non–technology experts with no programming experience. The government is now rolling it out nationally. As of mid-December, more than 10,500 people, including at least 4,000 outside of Finland’s borders, had graduated from the course. More than 250 companies have also pledged to train part or all of their workforce.

WHY IT MATTERS: most companies in the list are US, some Canadian (GO-Habs-GO!) and some are Chinese. But watch out, AI may be "made in China" real soon! As I return from CES2018, I expect that future lists will be dominated by China in the coming years given the level of intensity that I have seen at the show. This is good (competition always is) but I have just one note of care: privacy protection may suffer if we are not careful. Case in point: China already uses public AI powered security cameras to track individuals and do public shaming in bus stops. More on this in a later post...
