The modern college student has multiple technological devices that they utilize on a regular – typically daily – basis. Additionally, the makeup of students has shifted strongly toward non-traditional students, which now make up 73% of all undergraduate students. In respect to the number of mobile devices that are available, out of 7 billion people on the planet there are an overwhelming 5 billion mobile phones! While realizing that this means students spend quite a bit of times using mobile devices, what many of us did not realize is the way in which students are accessing information on those devices. Rather than simply accessing information via the internet, students spend more time accessing information via a mobile app. Individuals are also spending more and more time each week accessing social media sites, and most prefer to communicate through these sites instead of email.

In organizing the resignation of University of Virginia President Theresa Sullivan, Rector Helen E. Dragas may have expressed the concerns of many higher education boards of directors about the impact and effective use of education technology. Other Presidents and Chancellors may now have a similar career-threatening incentive. History in technology suggests a wave of implementation of “online courses” will follow when decision-makers are presented with similar press enthusiasm for a technology.

As a Moderator, you are automatically given all permissions. The global permissions given to Participants are established when the session is initially created and configured. If permissions are turned on during session configuration, Participants can use all the Blackboard Collaborate Web Conferencing features except Application Sharing, Web Tour and Closed Captioning. If permissions are turned off during session configuration, Participants will only be able to use the buttons in the toolbar (emoticons, raise hand, etc.), view profiles and send Moderators private Chat messages.

Blackboard has become the latest company to get into the business of helping colleges and universities build online programs. The company, which built its education technology empire on selling software and implementation support, has upped investment in its “online program management services” in an effort to compete with a growing number of entities that are taking aim at the many colleges that are scrambling to reassert, or reinvent, their brands on the increasingly crowded frontier of online higher education.

To make the student experience go smoothly, we recommend that instructors create a brief, non-graded exam that requires the use of Respondus LockDown Browser. The practice exam will familiarize students with the software and ensure that it has been installed properly.Another helpful tool is the student version of the Respondus LockDown Browser Quick Start Guide (available from the Resources area of CourseSites.) It’s just one page and can be easily distributed.

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend the BbWorld conference and conduct a private interview with Chief Technology Officer and President of Academic Platforms Ray Henderson.1 What I learned is that the company is embarking on a fairly radical, high-risk/high-reward strategy of re-architecting both their platform and their business model. The implications of what they are attempting are much larger than you might infer from the press releases.

WASHINGTON, July 2, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Blackboard Inc. and Pearson today announced a new integration for using Pearson's leading learning solution - MyLab / Mastering - within Blackboard's flagship learning management system (LMS). KF: This type of collaboration seems to be on the rise. The influence of major publishing houses in the development of teaching programs is something to be monitored. Seems to demand a deliberately critical pedagogy to ensure that learning pathways maintain diversity.
