Big data has developed and grown significantly over the last several years. It has evolved as more than just a trend or a buzz word. In fact, more and more organizations have begun to leverage big data in all aspects of business. However, just how big is big data? This infographic we have created attempts to show important facts and latest findings that you need to know.
What is the Internet of Things? No matter what term you prefer, the Internet of Things is about the exchange of information and being able to manage and archive the information moving forward. Manufacturing Industry Strategist Mark Morley explores IoT and how it will impact tomorrow’s digital business and the global digital supply chain.
AS PART of Big Data Week (April 20-26), ScienceNetwork WA invited the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre to share some of its insights on big data through a five-part series. Today read about how one of WA’s nationally-recognised scientists uses facilities here in Perth to delve into the human genetic code.
“You want to see our sensor?” Pierre Forcioli-Conti gestures at a high window that leads to the roof. “You’ll have to climb over Matt’s desk and go out the window.” No problem. I wriggle through the window and climb out on top of the the refurbished 1940s movie theater on Mission Street in San Francisco. It doubles as his office.
The use of data management and analytics is on the rise as more and more companies realize the enormous impact this can have on their businesses. In fact, an IDG Enterprise studyreveals that “organizations are seeing exponential growth in the amount of data managed with an expected increase of 76% within the next 12-18 months.”
In order to leverage data for your business effectively though, you have to first develop a clear understanding of what data is and how you can efficiently make the most out of it. We have come up with this ultimate guide to data management in order to help you out.
Microsoft announced yesterday that it has acquired Datazen--a mobile business intelligence and data visualization service. The move will allow Microsoft to deliver Power BI across mobile devices, including iOS and Android.
There are a few major trends driving business these days. Two of them are mobile devices and big data analytics. Microsoft recognizes the value of helping customers access business analytics from mobile devices. It has been pushing the mobile first / cloud first mantra since Satya Nadella took the helm, and the Datazen acquisition will enable Microsoft to raise the bar and provide even greater value.
Did you know that by 2020, the Internet of Everything is forecast to have over 40 billion active devices?
For such a massive market there is still much conjecture on market definitions. The Internet of Everything is the final evolutionary stage of the connected world, in which the previously unconnected, physical-first objects and processes, as well as humans, converge with those that are digital-first by their nature.
In short, ABI Research defines the IoE market below as a combination of the Internet of Things, Internet of Digital, and Internet of Humans.
The 2020 Science report released in 2005 observed that science was changing in a subtle but fundamental way--from the use of computing to support scientific work, to integrating Computer Science (CS) concepts and tools into the very fabric of science. One only has to look at how data science played
This week I interviewed Padma Warrior, CTO and Chief Strategist of Cisco, to discuss the Internet of Everything (IoE). Padma is a brilliant and visionary person, one of the most important female leaders of this decade. She first got my attention when she quoted a recent Cisco study placing the value of IoE as a $19 trillion opportunity. This blog is about how you can tap into that $19 trillion.

This video shows an example of the kind of research that can be done using “big data”. The lead educators have been particularly fascinated with data from the Internet, such as data on what we search for on Google. This data is global: never before have we had an opportunity to measure what information people are looking for all over the world.
Watch this video to find out what was discovered in this data, and what challenges there were in exploiting this global depth.
AS PART of Big Data Week (April 20-26), ScienceNetwork WA invited the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre to share some of its insights on big data through a five-part series. Today, Curtin University Radio Astronomy Professor Steven Tingay explores how huge amounts of data generated by local astronomy projects is managed.
The world of smart devices talking to each other—and to us—is well underway and here to stay. To connect to the Internet of Things opportunity, it’s key to design and build networking infrastructures that can handle massive amounts of new data.
Are you a data nerd? This week’s infographic by New Relic zeroes in on how companies are using data to improve their products/applications and speed up their deployments.
The volume of data captured by the Internet of Things (IoT) will exceed 1.6 zettabytes by 2020, according to a recent forecast from ABI Research.
According to the report, "the IoT is currently undergoing a major paradigm shift from cloud computing toward edge computing. On one hand, this shift is opening up edge-based data to meaningful analysis, by distributing the analytic workloads across the network. On the other hand, it is also shoring up the cloud-level capabilities by making the transmitted data more actionable, by enriching and contextualizing the payloads."
It is a 'win-win' if we measure the right things with the right instruments. Giving the end user the ability to interrogate the data in ways they want should balance some of the bias that might come from eliminating important context characteristics. Then the NSS could be balanced off with other operational data....
Working with digital strategist, Katz Kiely, early in 2014 Loop Labs designed and developed "Walk the Talk", an intervention that inspired children to design a video game that encouraged a greater awareness of the benefits of walking. This was used together with a mobile app that allowed players to monitor their walking.
In 2015 Loop Labs worked with educational theorist, Graham Brown-Martin, who conceived the "Urban Citizen Science Programme" that deployed more than 30 air quality sensors and 100 activity trackers amongst homes and families in the London Borough of Lambeth. These devices were used as part of an ongoing awareness and behavioural change programme focused on air quality and mindful walking.
Big Data Week is one of the most unique global platforms of interconnected community events focusing on the social, political, technological impacts of Data
Big data strategies allow researchers and learners to engage with social media streams in new ways. The ability to manage and process the huge volumes of qualitative data in the public domain ushers in a new era of sense-making.
