From Babylonians to Breitling; Mastery of Time exhibition heads to Paris | WatchPro | La Biennale - Paris | Scoop.it

"The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) is hosting an exhibition within the Biennale Des Antiquaries called The Mastery of Time, a six part journey into the evolution of horology starting at the sundial and ending with the modern complications we admire today.

(...)

The exhibition in Paris will take visitors through the history of time technology divided up into six chapters. The first, Horology, A Child of Astronomy From The Origins To The Late 13th Century, opens with 2400 BC pieces, moves on to the 4th Century where hands and dials came into play in conjunction with astronomy. It explores the role of Julius Caesar’s empire building on inventing better methods of marking time, and ends with a look at 13th century European mechanical clocks.

Following this is the second chapter which focuses on Clocks to watches between the 14th and 16th Centuries. This predominately looks at the period when clocks were viewed more as fine artworks, putting them on a par with jewellery as collectable objet first, and reliable timepieces second.

The third part of the exhibition looks at the growing precision within timepieces between the 16th and 18th centuries when the work of Copernicus marks a turning point in the history of thought and scientific progress. From 1500 to the late 18th century, aided by earlier discoveries, the making of timepieces reaped the benefits of fundamental inventions by such great minds as Galileo, Huygens, Hooke, and Fatio. It is during this chapter that watches gain much greater accuracy and the battle between fledgling watch companies to invent complications began.

The Industrial Revolution comes next and delves into the foundation of horology as an important industry in Europe, marked most memorably with the birth of the wristwatch, which made its first appearance in 1875. Manufacturing was dispersed across the UK France and Germany, but it was Switzerland that emerged strongest from this period.

The fifth and sixth chapters of the exhibition present more modern designs. Chapter five focuses on the growing popularity of quartz and the unprecedented precision of the atomic clock. From 2000 to the present day we have a revival of the wristwatch as a collectable and respected art form, while at the same time maintaining precise timekeeping and creating ever-more impressive complications.

Biennale Des Antiquaires has described the horological exhibition as “a journey through time in six parts, which bring to life the milestones in this constant quest to master time”.

The Biennale Des Antiquaires runs September 10-18."

Swiss Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie and Paris Biennale Unveil "Mastery of Time" Watch Exhibition

Swiss Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie and Paris Biennale Unveil "Mastery of Time" Watch Exhibition | La Biennale - Paris | Scoop.it

This year the Biennale, which transforms the famed Grand Palais into one of the world’s foremost exhibition space for art and jewels, is working with the Geneva-based Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) to host a thematic exhibition that chronicles the history of time measurement and watchmaking.

While the Biennale has had watch exhibitors in the past, this specially themed display will include artifacts and historical watches that demonstrate man’s insatiable desire to track time. Additionally, visitors will have the opportunity to talk with master craftsmen and watchmakers in the field today to discover more about this time-honored craft.

The exhibit will showcase the role astronomy played in the early days of time tracking, with planting and harvesting seasons being predicted by the moon and stars. It then moves to the early days of travel watches and pocket watches, and finally to the past century and a half of wristwatch making and innovation. This includes the evolution of quartz watches, the Atomic clock, and the technically precise complications of today.

Special pieces that will be on display include early sundials, 15th-, 16th-, 17th- and 18th-century table clocks, astronomical clocks and pocket watches and more. The various clocks and watches on display also demonstrate the evolution of a variety of crafts used in watchmaking over the century, including enameling, gem setting, engraving and complicated watchmaking.

The renewal of the 2016 Biennale des Antiquaires - Paris

The renewal of the 2016 Biennale des Antiquaires - Paris | La Biennale - Paris | Scoop.it

Always greeted by a spectacular scenography and an amazing lineup of exhibitors, the Biennale desAntiquaires event in Paris has been a must-attend event for more half a century and the quintessence of French “art de vivre. In september 2016, the Biennale des Antiquaires (GRAND PALAIS, from September 10th to September 18th) will complete a cycle to become an annual event from 2017, without abandoning what makes its exception

.

For the first time, the selection of the exhibitors is made by an international committee of fifteen members, including members of the board of the SNA, curators, art historians and collectors. The “Biennial Commitee” of the 28th Biennale des Antiquaires is chaired by Henri Loyrette while the talented set designer Nathalie Crinière was tapped to create the scenography of this September edition.

After announcing in April an initial list of galleries that showcase the return of the Biennale des Antiquaires, the Biennale has confirmed a list of 124 exhibitors: 120 antique and four houses of Haute Joaillerie. In addition to French exhibitors, the 2016 Biennale participants include a selection of European and international galleries from Germany, Belgium, Canada, Spain, the U.S., Hong Kong, India, Italy, Monaco, and so on.

Comprised of two public collections – one of French prestige, the other international – and the mobilization of larger luxury watch houses via the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, the 2016 Biennale will offer three exhibitions of distinct cultural and aesthetic experience. Collectors and visitors, in addition to discovering the masterpieces, jewelry, and selected objects on display, can also explore three unprecedented exhibitions in the history of the Biennale from Le Mobilier National in France, Russia’s State Hermitage Museum, and the Fondation de la Haute Hologerie in Switzerland.

Dealer's Notebook: Tomasso Brothers Fine Art | Artinfo

Dealer's Notebook: Tomasso Brothers Fine Art | Artinfo | La Biennale - Paris | Scoop.it

Raised in a music and art-loving Italian family living in Yorkshire, Dino Tomasso and his brother Raffaello, became passionate about art very early in their childhood. In 1993, the brothers started Tomasso Brothers Fine Art with a view to studying and dealing in European decorative arts from their home at Bardon Hall, Leeds [Yorkshire, UK], fulfilling their own passion for the field. Their first foray into the retail world came in 2008, when, strongly supported by Adam Williams in New York, they held their first major selling exhibition of sculpture. “Prior to this we’d spent two decades successfully supplying some of the world’s foremost art dealers with great objects, whilst remaining behind the scenes ourselves,” Dino explains. The gallery is participating for the first time this year in the Biennale des Antiquaires.

What will be the highlights of your booth?

We will present some recent discoveries, including a bronze bust of Modios Asiatikos by François Girardon, court sculptor to Louis XIV. The bust was once part of the sculptor’s personal collection and is portrayed in the series of engravings, known as La Galerie de Girardon (circa 1709). It later entered the collection of the Tuileries Palace, of which it bears the inventory mark. Another important discovery is a terracotta bust of the French philosopher Michel de Montaigne by the great Flemish sculptor Gilles-Lambert Godecharle. It’s the only known study for a stone bust that he later executed for the gardens of the Château de Wespelaer, and which is now held by the Musée des Beaux Arts in Brussels. We also have an impressive 17th-century bronze version of Alessandro Algardi’s Infant Hercules wrestling a Snake. The work has great provenance. After extensive research we were able to identify the collector’s monogram stamped into the bronze as that of the powerful Russian Musin-Pushkin family. Later, the work became part of the collection of Eugène Secrétan, the 19th-century French industrialist who famously donated 60,000 kilos of copper for the construction of the Statue of Liberty in New York.

Our stand will also feature a small, discreet exhibition of erotic art from antiquity to the neoclassical period that will include a recently rediscovered terracotta relief by the Swedish neoclassical master, Johan Tobias Sergel, of a satyr and a nymph crowned by Cupid.

CIJ International Jewellery TRENDS & COLOURS - IN THE PRESS: Haute Joaillerie houses at The Biennale des Antiquaires

CIJ International Jewellery TRENDS & COLOURS - IN THE PRESS: Haute Joaillerie houses at The Biennale des Antiquaires | La Biennale - Paris | Scoop.it

From September 10-18 The Biennale des Antiquaires will turn Paris’ Grand Palais into one of the world’s most exquisite ephemeral museums.

One of the most anticipated artistic and cultural events of the season, the Biennale des Antiquaires will, over the course of ten days fill the Grand Palais with masterpieces from Old Master to Modern, antiquities, décor and design, haute joaillerie, and objet d’art nonpareil, turning the venue in to a setting that is nothing short of extraordinary.

The presence of four international Haute Joaillerie houses: Boghossian Jewels (London & Brussels), Cindy Chao The Art Jewel (Taipei, Taiwan), De Grisogono (Switzerland), and Nirav Modi (India) – symbols of a global dynamic, with young, independent talents embodying the finest in Haute Joaillerie.

In a jewellery box that promises to break and redefine the classic codes for jewellery presentation, Peruvian-born, New York-based interdisciplinary light sculpture artist Grimanesa Amorós will realize the haute joaillerie booth for Cindy Chao The Art Jewel (Taipei). Chao makes her first appearance at the Biennale this year and will present to the public for the first time the “Black Label Masterpieces” – her most prestigious and exclusive line that includes previously unreleased pieces to be unveiled exclusively at the Grand Palais this September.

Nirav Modi (India) will reinvent the splendor of jewelry from the Maharajas – as illustrated by a necklace made of 870 carats of emeralds and 146 carats of diamonds. Modi makes his debut at this year’s Biennale not only as an exhibitor of haute joaillerie, but also as a collector and one of the most influential and respected entrepreneurs on the Indian subcontinent.

For the first time, the Biennale invite major institutions for three special exhibitions, under the sign of excellence :

  • The State Hermitage Museum / St Petersburg: "A century of French elegance"
  • Le Mobilier national / Paris: "Tribute to the Mobilier national: Tradition & Audace"
  • La Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie / Geneva: "The Mastery of Time"

LA BIENNALE DES ANTIQUAIRES SE TIENDRA DU 10 AU 18 SEPTEMBRE

LA BIENNALE DES ANTIQUAIRES SE TIENDRA DU 10 AU 18 SEPTEMBRE | La Biennale - Paris | Scoop.it

Indian Jeweler Nirav Modi to debut at the Biennale des Antiquaires

Indian Jeweler Nirav Modi to debut at the Biennale des Antiquaires | La Biennale - Paris | Scoop.it

Many of the jewelry houses that participated in the 2014 Biennale des Antiquaires are not returning this year, but the Paris fair will still offer plenty of sparkle by opening its doors to new jewelers, like Cindy Chao (read story here) and Nirav Modi.

Born into a family of diamond wholesaler, Nirav Modi only established his eponymous brand in 2010, but it has quickly grown with boutiques in Delhi, Mumbai, and New York, plus three boutique in Hong Kong.

The jeweler is known for his innovate cutting technique, having created four unique diamond cuts (Jasmine, Endless, Ainra, and Mughal), as well as his Embrace collection of rings and bangles made of gold that stretch to fit any finger or wrist size.

He will unveil three unique pieces at the Biennale, including the “Emerald Maharani Necklace,” a three-strand necklace of graduated emerald beads (873 carats) complemented by oval and pear jasmine cut diamonds (146 carats) all of which brings to mind the splendor of the Maharajas.

The other pieces, “Ainra Waterfall Earrings” and “Fancy Colored Ainra Bracelet,” will showcase the Ainra cut where two curved diamonds are cut and set to create an all-diamond link.

Inspired by the fluidity in a waterfall, the earrings sport diamonds cascading down from a cluster of pear and marquise diamonds, while the bracelet mixes fancy champagne pink marquise diamonds and brilliant cut white diamonds.

Modi’s participation in the Biennale will help raise the jeweler’s profile amongst European collectors, and provides a timely launch for his latest boutique, the first in Europe, which is set to open on Old Bond Street in London this September.

A new gallery collaboration at Paris Biennale des Antiquaires 2016

A new gallery collaboration at Paris Biennale des Antiquaires 2016 | La Biennale - Paris | Scoop.it

PARIS.- E & R Cyzer and Alon Zakaim Fine Art announced their inaugural collaboration, exhibiting as Cyzer & Zakaim at the 28th Biennale des Antiquaires, Paris. Their collaboration will for the first time bring to the public eye a number of fine paintings of distinguished provenance, and continues the close relationship between the two London art dealers.

A highlight to be exhibited on their joint stand will be a spectacular Wassily Kandinsky work on paper, Scharf, from 1928. This work boasts a compelling provenance, having been until recently in the important collection of Julia Wasserman, a well-known Connecticut representative and philanthropist who passed away in 2015. Mrs Wasserman was an avid collector of modern masterpieces, amassing a prominent collection with her husband in their home in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. Mrs Wasserman’s journey to public service and later to art patron was remarkable, as she escaped from Nazi Germany to New York in 1941 at the age of 14 and subsequently achieved her high rank through great determination. As a result, it is easy to see the reason for Mrs Wasserman’s attraction to the boldness and dynamism of ‘Scharf’. This work is from one of the pivotal moments of Kandinsky’s creative and intellectual career. It was conceived during the Bauhaus period, shortly after the publication of Kandinsky’s influential 1926 text Point and Line to Plane, where he further developed the theories of the Bauhaus on composition and space.

In addition, Cyzer and Zakaim will be showing a significant painting by Marc Chagall from a notable private collection. L’ane rouge, La Tour Eiffel, 1953, is infused with the passionate energy, colour, and romantic longing which defines Chagall’s work of this period. It is a wonderful example of the profound role the city played in the artist’s life.

Cyzer & Zakaim will also present an important Pissarro oil, Le Chou à Pontoise, painted in 1882. The work has outstanding provenance, having first been acquired by the director of Georges Petit galerie, and close friend of Mr Petit himself, Isidor Montaignac. The painting later passed through the hands of Paul Durand-Ruel in the 1920s. The short, swift brushstrokes in the painting pre-empt Pissarro’s Neo-Impressionistic style, and the subject of ‘Le Chou’ references the artist’s intimate dialogue with Cézanne and Gauguin during this period. Pontoise itself marked a turning point for the artist, fuelling his desire to capture a place scarcely painted by the more traditional French masters, and therefore contributing to the new vocabulary of landscape painting established by the Impressionists.

In addition seminal works by artists including Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Henri Le Sidaner, Jean Dubuffet, Joan Miró and Raoul Dufy will be exhibited.

E & R Cyzer and Alon Zakaim Fine Art will continue to trade independently from their London galleries and look forward to expanding this partnership, showcasing a selection of their finest works as Cyzer & Zakaim.

Cyzer & Zakaim will be exhibiting on Stand N22, Biennale des Antiquaires, Grand Palais, Avenue Winston Churchill, 75008 Paris. The fair is open from Saturday 10th to Sunday 18th September. Opening hours are 11am - 8 pm (11am - 11 pm Thursday 15th).
